How to Host an Eco-Friendly Bridal Shower – 11+ Ideas

tablescape-with-text-how-to-host-an-eco-friendly-bridal-shower

Honestly, there is a lot that could be improved about the modern bridal shower.

What is meant to be a day celebrating the bride is often boring, stuffy and not so eco-friendly. (So much waste! So many balloons!)

Let’s face it, at the modern bridal shower you’re usually just watching the soon-to-be-bride open gifts for hours. Snooze.

Why Host a Sustainable Bridal Shower?

Eco-friendly bridal showers tend to be more fun.

Why? Because they remove a lot of the fluff.

When you ditch the played-out games and stuffy tablescapes for something that is truly a reflection of the bride, you often end up with an event that is better for the environment and more meaningful for everyone involved.

The Art of Gathering Sustainably

As Priya Parker says in her book The Art of Gathering, all gatherings must have a purpose, and one that is “specific, unique, and disputable.”

If the purpose of the bridal shower is to celebrate the bride as an individual before she is inextricably linked to another forever, then make sure the shower reflects that and not outdated expectations around what a bridal shower is supposed to be.

You definitely don’t have to model a bridal shower after every other shower you’ve been to in your life.

If you got a crunchy-granola bride that cares about planet Earth, read on for ideas to incorporate into a super fun, eco-friendly bridal shower. It might just be the best party you’ve ever been to.

11+ Ideas for a More Eco-Friendly Bridal Shower

Host outdoors

Renting out a restaurant or indoor event space can be expensive and costly to the environment. Save on energy and reduce your shower’s carbon footprint by hosting outside. Plus, the great outdoors is always prettier than the fanciest indoor space. The options are endless: try a garden party, a backyard buffet, or poolside soiree. Use Peerspace to look up unique outdoor spaces to rent in a city or town near you or just get creative in your own backyard.

Paperless or recycled invites

Snail mail is fun, but consider skipping the paper invites for the bridal shower. (Maybe prioritize paper invites for the actual wedding!) In lieu of paper invites, Greenvelope offers the full snail mail experience, but with extras you can only get digitally, like Google maps directions, calendar invites, and links right to the gift registry. If you’re set on paper invites, recycled paper is your next most sustainable option. The Knot and Paper Culture offer recycled options.

Rent!

Rent decorations or other items you’ll need for the bridal shower only (i.e. single-use!). Want a big, beautiful wicker peacock chair for your bride-to-be to sit in at center stage? Rent it! Want a backdrop or greenery wall for photos? RENT! Don’t be the person who swears they’ll use those decorations again one day while they sit in your garage, or worse–end up in a landfill.

Zero-waste decorations

According to the Green Bride Guide, the average wedding produces 400 pounds of garbage. Let’s nip that in the bud starting with the bridal shower. Decorations are a major offender when it comes to waste, as many party decorations are single-use. Instead, try decorating with items that can be reused after the party or decorate with sustainable materials that biodegrade (like dried flowers). Or try other friendly party decoration options like biodegradable streamers or fabric bunting banners.

Skip the balloons

Balloons may look innocent, but they are actually a major source of pollution, particularly to our world’s oceans. Even worse, balloons actually pose a threat to marine life. Whales, dolphins and sea turtles can ingest or be strangled by balloons and ribbons. Also, balloons take awhile to decompose–anywhere from four months to six years. Don’t trash the ocean and consider tissue pom poms or paper lanterns for eco-friendly bridal shower decorations instead.

Locally sourced flowers

Cut flowers are beautiful for a bridal shower, but are they sustainable? While they certainly are natural, flowers may not actually be the most sustainable decoration choice if they are shipped from far away (), packaged in plastic, and sprayed with pesticides. The most sustainable choice for flowers is to shop locally, like at your local farmer’s market, or even cut some flowers yourself! If you do not have local flowers available to you, consider US-grown flower delivery companies like Bouqs for your eco-friendly bridal shower.

Serve buffet or family-style

When you’re hosting a sustainable bridal shower, one of the major goals is to reduce the amount of plastic. Think about the food you are serving and how much plastic packaging it’s going to take to arrive at your shower safely. Instead of offering individually wrapped sandwiches and cupcakes, can you serve buffet or family style?

Eco-friendly tablescape

Another major offender when it comes to party waste is plastic, single-use tableware. The most sustainable option is to go with real ceramic, porcelain or glass dishware that can be washed and reused. Don’t worry if you don’t have enough plates to serve 40+ people, tableware and cloth can be rented too! If you want to go with single-use, opt for more sustainable options like biodegradable tableware made from sugar cane. A more classy option would be Meri Meri’s eco party line, which offers pastel scalloped plates made from bamboo.

Sustainable party games

Too often at bridal showers you get the paper printable games left on the table that get thrown in the trash after the party. In lieu of paper games, get creative with games that involve your bride-to-be and the guests more interactively. For example, can the guests write down a memory they had with the bride on a scrap of paper and have the bride guess who it is based on the description? This requires some skillful MCing, but it is worth it in the end and makes for a better and more personalized experience for everyone.

Plastic-free favors

Sustainable bridal shower favors are plastic-free and zero waste. Options include handmade soap, potted plants, or custom seed packets.

Get creative with gift wrapping

Wrapping paper creates millions of tons of waste, and there is evidence that at least half of it ends up in landfills. Skip the wrapping paper at your bridal shower if you can. Include a request in the invite that guests bring their gifts unwrapped. Or embrace the Japanese tradition of furoshiki, or cloth wrapping paper. I like the company Unwrp for beautiful fabric wrap options.

Where to Buy Ethical and Sustainable Swimwear – 11+ Eco-Friendly Brands

Looking for sustainable swimwear? These brands make fashionable swim suits that also happen to be better for the planet.

[This post was updated on August 13, 2022.]

There’s a lot of dialogue on the internet right now around what makes consumer purchasing habits around clothing actually sustainable. Many folks are calling out content creators in the sustainable fashion niche who film huge hauls of sustainable clothing on a regular basis.

Can we really call replacing your wardrobe every few months a sustainable practice, even if you’re buying from the most eco-friendly and ethical brands? (There’s a conversation to be had around who has access to sustainable fashion brands, as these pieces are usually more expensive.)

Often, the most sustainable thing you can do is to wear the items you already have. But where does swimwear factor into this ethos?

This post is all about sustainable swimwear.

Why Buy Sustainable Swimwear

First, swimwear simply doesn’t last as long as other sustainable clothing. If you’re doing it right, you’re exposing your swimsuit to the effects of sun, chlorine and saltwater. Over a few seasons, it’s not uncommon for swimwear to become stretched, bleached, and tattered.

As a result, you might find yourself needing to replace swimwear more often than your most cherished sustainable pieces.

If a bathing suit is going in the bin, you’ll want to make sure it is made of materials that won’t harm the planet.

In addition, swimwear is not something that you can thrift, so you have to go to the market directly if you want to find sustainable or ethically made swimwear.

For these reasons, it makes sense to prioritize and invest in eco-friendly swimwear from sustainable brands.

Where to Buy Sustainable Swimwear

However, it can be hard to vet brands for their commitment to ethical and sustainable practices. That is where this list comes in!

We did the hard work of researching brands’ materials and manufacturing practices to come up with a list of top sustainable swimwear brands to buy your next suit from.

Happy swimming!

Where to Buy Sustainable Swimwear

#1: Sustainable Swimwear Brand – Chromat

Chromat Drew Top.

Not only is Chromat size-inclusive, gender-inclusive and high fashion, they are extremely committed to sustainable manufacturing of their swimwear. Chromat’s swimwear is made with nylon spun from fishing nets and post-consumer plastic bottles. They work with a diving team to remove over 160 tons of fishing nets from the world’s oceans and turn them into yarn together with other nylon waste.

#2: Sustainable Swimwear – BOLD Swim

BOLD Swim Sophia One Piece Swimsuit.

As the name suggests, this BIPOC-lead brand creates swimwear for the bold. The fabrics used in BOLD Swim’s pieces are completely biodegradable, nontoxic and UV protective. Plus, they come in innovative designs and adorable patterns like this one piece that is reminiscent of cotton-candy clouds.

#3: Sustainable Swimwear Brands – Girlfriend Collective

Girlfriend Collective Banana Volley Cheeky Bikini.

When the popular activewear brand came out with a sustainable swimwear line their almost cult-like following couldn’t get enough. GF Swim, with their signature bold colors and classic shapes, is made with recycled fishing nets and post-industrial waste recovered from the ocean Plus, Girlfriend Collective gives back 1% of swimwear purchases to charity Healthy Seas.

#4: UK Sustainable Swimwear – Boden

Boden Corsica Bikini Top.

UK-based sustainable swimwear brand Boden makes swimsuits that provide more coverage and classic silhouettes for those that like their booties covered. Thankfully all that extra fabric is made with ECONYL® regenerated nylon, which is made entirely from ocean and landfill waste.

#5: Ethical Sustainable Swimwear – TomboyX

TomboyX swimwear.

TomboyX is an inclusive brand that began making underwear for individuals no matter where they fell on the gender and size spectrum. For those that aren’t necessarily down with an itty-bitty bikini, TomboyX creates gender-neutral unisuits, shorts, and racerbacks and halter swim tops made with OEKO-Tex certified fabrics.

#6: Sustainable Swim Suits – Galamaar

Galamaar Nico Tie Top in Noir.

LA-based swimwear brand Galamaar has sustainable swimwear down to the very last detail. Their classically sexy swimsuits come with sustainable made-in-LA pad inserts, recycled hang tags, regenerated mixed metal hardware and eco-packaging materials. Galamaar swim is an investment, but the quality will ensure a longer-lasting bathing suit.

#7: Sustainable Swimwear – Londre

Londre THE 1813 PUFF SHOULDER TOP.

Vancouver-based brand Londre creates swimwear pieces that you feel like you can also wear out on a fancy night on the town. Luckily, their fashion-forward swimwear is made from recycled materials, sourced from an OEKO-Tex certified factory.

#8: Sustainable Swim – Youswim

Youswim Aplomb One Piece.

UK-based brand Youswim is evidence that if you find a good thing, stick with it. All their swim styles feature locally made ribbed fabrics that stretch up to seven sizes. Their peices are ethically woven, dyed, cut and sewn in England using European-sourced nylon and elastane and packed in eco-friendly packaging in London.

#9: Sustainable Swim – SKATIE

SKATIE Melly bottoms.

This sustainable swimwear brand exudes California cool. Recently, the brand’s Melly bottoms went viral for providing the perfect cheeky cut and creating an hourglass figure. (I instantly purchased after these rave reviews! I am often trying to create the illusion of curves for myself.) Fortunately, SKATIE also emphasizes sustainable fabric composition, locally sourced manufacturers, and even compostable mailers. They also only work with production partners that pay a living wage and provide paid vacation.

#10: Sustainable Swimwear – Fisch

FISCH Sucre Jet Black Rib.

FISCH is an eco-innovative label inspired by the Creative Director’s childhood spent on Saint Bart’s snorkeling and exploring the island’s wildlife. The brand offers statement pieces that are worth the investment. They also happen to be one of the first swim brands to use ECONYL®, a 100% regenerated nylon fiber crafted from abandoned fishing nets and other types of nylon waste. Today, all of their stunning suits are made with ECONYL®.

#11: Sustainable Swimwear Brand – Summersalt

Summersalt The Sidestroke One Piece.

You’ve likely seen Summersalt’s iconic color block one pieces around the internet. But, did you know the brand is also committed to sustainability? Their swim suits are made with majority recycled polyamide and are built to last.

Colorful Clean Makeup That Won’t Sweat Off This Summer

Summer is a time to experiment with bright, bold and colorful makeup.

Unfortunately, this type of makeup does not always play nicely with the heat and summertime sun. Before you know it, your bold makeup look may be smudged, creased or completely running down your face. (Anyone else sweat buckets in the summer?!)

On top of the heat, clean makeup is not exactly known for its ability to last in the best of conditions. This is because clean beauty often forgoes ingredients like silicones that typically extend wear on the skin.

Bold Clean Makeup That Lasts

But fear not! Your commitment to safer products does not mean you don’t get to have any fun with bold colors or suffer in the summer heat.

There are clean makeup brands that are formulated to give fantastic color payoff and last all day. (I’m talking about the kind of results you would expect with more traditional makeup brands!)

These products are our favorite for colorful makeup looks that will last for a day at the pool or summer soiree.

Read on for our recommendations for high-impact clean makeup that won’t sweat off this summer.

Best Colorful Clean Makeup

C’est Moi Visionary Makeup Crayon – $8

These unbelievably fun makeup crayons come in all colors of the rainbow. The pencil tip is silky smooth and makes the crayon easy to work with despite the bold colors. A baby blue winged liner? A graphic white eye à la Ariana Grande in the Rain on Me music video? The sky’s the limit when it comes to the colorful makeup looks you could create with these bad boys.

Ere Perez Beetroot Cheek & Lip Tint – $27

When we saw makeup queen Lisa Elridge use this lip tint in her full face of clean makeup tutorial, we knew we had to try it. Pigmented with actual beets, this color is so long-lasting it’s almost difficult to remove at the end of the day. The fuschia pink shade ‘Fun’ is especially apt for summer.

Ilia Color Block High Impact Lipstick – $28

As the name suggests, Ilia’s Color Block lipsticks are indeed high-impact. These highly pigmented lipsticks come in 15 stunning shades that are applicable yearound, but our favorite summertime picks are ‘Flame’ and ‘Knockout.’

Aether Beauty Joshua Tree Desert Matte Palette – $58

We could gush about the Aether Beauty brand. Relatively new to the clean makeup scene, Aether Beauty has already made waves with their packaging by going completely compostable and mirrorless. The Joshua Tree palette is inspired by the bold colors of Joshua Tree National Park and proceeds of your purchase go to the Mojave Desert Land Trust. Did we mention those colors?! The lavender and sunshine-y yellow alone make us swoon.

Fitglow Beauty Lip Color Serum – $42

It’s a bold lip product and a nourishing serum all-in-one. The plant-based gloss also subtly plumps your lips with vegan collagen and other healthy ingredients. There are plenty of fun shades to choose from, but we especially like the coral ‘Beach Glow’ color for summer.

Zuzu Luxe Mascara in Navy – $17.60

A mascara typically wouldn’t make a list of bold, colorful makeup products to try–but hear me out. Try this Zuzu Luxe mascara in navy blue this summer. You won’t regret it. We’re claiming it now–this summer is the summer of blue mascara! Blue mascara is so cute and is just funky enough to draw a lot of compliments without being too over the top.

Axiology Lip-to-Lid Balmies in Out of Office – $36

Axiology really changed the clean beauty game when they introduced their line of multipurpose makeup in zero-waste, plastic free packaging. Beyond their commitment to sustainability, Axiology’s Balmies provide bold color that can be applied anywhere from your lids, cheeks to lips. We like the ‘Out of Office’ range of three shades, including Watermelon, Raspberry, and Frosting. Sounds delicious.

The Complete Guide to Natural Deodorant

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard about ‘natural deodorant.’ The natural and clean beauty movement has put all of our daily products under a microscope (literally) and asked, “Is this actually slowly killing me?”

Maybe you’ve stuck to your traditional CVS antiperspirant. (I’ll take all the chemicals, thank youuuu!)

Maybe you’ve been using a natural deodorant for years, and you don’t quite know why other than you assume it is somehow better. (This is me until researching this article, to be honest.)

This article is for the natural deodorant-curious. I looked into the science behind the call for natural deodorant, and how natural deodorant affects the body compared to traditional antiperspirants.

We’ll cover what a deodorant is (compared to an antiperspirant), what natural deodorant means, why you might consider using a natural deodorant, and, importantly, does natural deodorant even work?

If you’re still interested in using a natural deodorant, I’ll give you my recommendations for the best natural deodorants in the last section.

Deodorant vs. Antiperspirant – Natural Deodorant Guide

First, some definitions. Deodorants and antiperspirants are actually two different products that work in entirely different ways.

An antiperspirant contains aluminum-based salts that physically block the sweat glands and prevent your armpits from producing sweat.

A deodorant will usually contain baking soda or some other ingredient to absorb moisture in addition to fragrance to mask odors. Deodorants allow your armpits to sweat as they normally would.

How Deodorants vs. Antiperspirants Work to Keep You Odor-Free

Why does this distinction between deodorants and antiperspirants matter?

The bacteria in your armpits are actually responsible for your stink. As bacteria metabolize nutrients in your sweat, they produce the compounds that we associate with body odor.

Antiperspirants prevent odor by reducing the moisture and nutrients the bacteria need.

Deodorants sop up some moisture, but mainly allow bacteria to go on living their best lives while masking odors with fragrance.

What Does Natural Deodorant Mean?

First of all, there is no official definition of a natural product. The term ‘natural’ is not overseen by any regulatory body in the United States.

Brands that use the term ‘natural’ to describe their deodorant are often first differentiating the product from an antiperspirant that uses aluminum. Instead, natural deodorants often use moisture wicking ingredients like baking soda or arrowroot powder.

Second, natural deodorants may be free from parabens and other chemicals that have at least the potential to affect human health.

Third, natural deodorants may be fragrance-free or use essential oils in lieu of artificial fragrances.

Why Use Natural Deodorant?

The demand for natural deodorants in the last few years seems to have arisen from two major concerns about traditional antiperspirants.

Natural Deodorant and the Skin Microbiome

First, there is concern around how antiperspirants may be affecting the skin microbiome of the armpit and how alterations in this delicate balance may affect your ability to fight off infection.

One 2016 study found that antispirant users had fewer colonies of culturable bacteria than deodorant users or people who don’t use any pit product.

The study also found Corynebacterium dominated the pits of non-product users, while the majority of bacteria found in both antiperspirant and deodorant users were Staphylococcaceae

This could be a significant distinction, as Corynebacterium are the mostly harmless bacteria that produce odors, but members of the Staphylococcaceae family can be associated with infection. (The study points out that the armpit is a common site of MRSA infection in athletes).

Interestingly, the study also found that after ceasing product use, the microbial diversity of the armpits of antiperspirant users grew to be actually higher than deodorant users and people who don’t use any product.

The authors speculate that antiperspirants may make the armpits more hospitable to bacteria that are not historically found in that area. Whether that is a good, bad or neither is still unknown.

Still, any conclusions from this study are still speculative, and more research is needed to determine the significance of the variability between those that use antiperspirants compared to deodorants or no products at all.

In summary, whether natural deodorants are actually better for your skin microbiome is still unknown. Science is working on it!

Deodorants and Breast Health – Natural Deodorant Guide

The effect traditional antiperspirants and deodorants may have on breast health has been another cause for concern driving the demand for natural deodorant.

Rumors dating back to the ‘90s have stated that blocking the sweat glands with antiperspirants could hinder the bodies to eliminate toxins, and therefore increase risk of breast cancer.

The potential estrogenic effect of aluminum in antiperspirants and parabens in traditional cosmetic products (including deodorants) has also caused a lot of speculation.

Luckily, a 2013 review of the available literature on antiperspirant and breast cancer has shown the link to be dubious at best, with one study actually demonstrating deodorants as having a protective effect.

Does Natural Deodorant Work?

Now time for the most important question–will natural deodorant actually keep me from smelling?

It does seem like both antiperspirants and deodorants maintain lower levels of the bacteria that produce odor through different mechanisms.

However, deodorants make your armpits more friendly to bacteria overall. This could be a bonus to some people concerned about their microbiome.

Antiperspirants of course have the added benefit of blocking sweat and keeping your underarms dry, thus also making your pits more inhospitable to stinky bacteria.

It all has to do with your personal preference, what you think smells good, and your interpretation of the available science.

At the very least, your armpits are an exciting area of research.

Best Natural Deodorants

These are some of my tried-and-test favorite natural deodorants.

Lavanila – The Healthy Deodorant in Vanilla Lavender

This natural deodorant is seriously witchcraft. The Lavanila brand is known for their fragrances and they bring that expertise to their natural deodorant. This cult classic has won many beauty awards for its floral-vanilla scent that is not cloying or overly-sweet.

Schmidt’s – Natural Deodorant in Rose & Vanilla

Schmidt’s has really taken over the natural deodorant game. Any of their many scents will be a winner and keep your pits smelling fresh, but I particularly recommend the rose and vanilla.

Native – Natural Deodorant in Cucumber & Mint

Native has long been lauded in the beauty community as the only natural deodorant that actually works. I don’t know if they’re the only ones (see above) but their natural deodorant is definitely effective. Try the subtle cucumber and mint scent.

Eco-Friendly Baby Gift Ideas for Expecting Moms that Love Sustainable Products

flat-lay-of-baby-products

You know that one friend who is always going on about paper straws and reusable bags? (Hi, it’s me). Well, now she’s pregnant and you want to shower her and her baby with all the certified organic and eco-friendly goodies you can find.

Or, perhaps you or your partner are pregnant and you’re looking into the most sustainable baby products on the market. (Congrats by the way!)

You’ve come to the right place! We’ve rounded up the best eco-friendly baby shower gifts for the expecting parent that loves sustainable products. All our recommended gifts are either reusable, made of natural materials or organic fabrics, and are completely baby-safe.

A Note on Truly Sustainable Baby Gifts – Eco-Friendly Baby Shower Gift Ideas

Remember the old sustainability adage–reduce, reuse, recycle. Notably, the first tenant is to “reduce.” It’s easy to go crazy shopping for the new infant in your life but remember the most sustainable option is not always to buy a bunch of new things.

What About the Registry? – Eco-Friendly Baby Shower Gift Ideas

When buying gifts for a baby shower, it’s important to stick to the registry if there is one. This is not only to ensure the expectant parent gets what they asked for, but to ensure that you are not buying items they have already stocked up on themselves. This kind of overconsumption creates waste and can burden new parents.

If you’re buying for someone else, check-in with the new parent to see if they are okay with you buying outside of the registry.

Some parents may even be okay with you buying more sustainable (or even used) versions of items they have on the registry. Just always check in!

You might also want to check in before buying items that involve a major commitment, like cloth diapers.

Give Your Time – Eco-Friendly Baby Shower Gift Ideas

Finally, perhaps the most sustainable gift idea doesn’t involve new products at all. Try organizing a meal train or offering help with chores during the postpartum period.

Gerber 5 Count Organic Birdseye Prefold Cloth Diaper, White

Wooden climbing arch by Wood and Room on Etsy.

Wooden Climbing Arch + Foldable Triangle + Climbing ladder/slide

It’s easy to just buy infant gear for a baby shower, but don’t dismiss shopping for later stages in the baby’s life. The infant months go by so fast. Your expectant parent will thank you that you had the foresight to shop for the later years. This wooden playset is a cute aesthetic addition to a minimalist nursery that becomes a practical indoor jungle gym when baby turns one or so.

Slow Travel Guide to Upper Cape Cod

sand-dunes-on-cape-cod

A bit of a misnomer, the ‘upper Cape’ actually refers to the towns closest to the mainland of Massachusetts (and not the most northern regions). If Cape Cod were an arm, the upper Cape would be the shoulder and bicep.

While the rugged coastline of the outer Cape might get much of the attention, the upper Cape offers marine wildlife, stretches of coastal flats, amazing food and some quintessential Cape Cod experiences.

What is Slow Travel?

The slow travel movement eschews the modern travel industry’s skew toward what is fast and convenient (often at the detriment to local business and ecology) in favor of what is sustainable for the traveler, the land and the community.

Cape Cod’s nearly 600 miles of coastline are uniquely threatened by climate change. Rising waters threaten to wipe out swaths of land, communities and integral species.

Luckily, through sustainable agriculture and aquaculture, eateries that feature local fare,  and eco-friendly tourist attractions, the upper Cape offers many experiences that are good for the precarious ecology of Cape Cod and will make memories that last a lifetime.

Food on Upper Cape Cod

From the farming communities of Falmouth to the thriving aquaculture industry in Barnstable, there are some remarkable foodie experiences to be had in the upper Cape.

Of course, the Cape specializes in seafood. The Cape Cod Bay in particular makes a perfect habitat for shellfish, and is now home to several oyster farms.

There are delicacies you will find on the Cape that you will not find anywhere else. Take stuffed quahog (pronounced ‘co-hog’) for example, which is made from the eponymous large, hard-shelled clam. The quahog is baked and stuffed back in its shell with breadcrumbs and herbs.

The upper Cape is the land of foodies. There is a high-quality farmers market nearly every night of the week and many trained chefs have put down roots here.

As the last fertile land before a long stretch of sandy dunes, the upper Cape is also home to plenty of inland organic farms. Many of them supply fresh produce to surrounding restaurants. Some of our favorites have eateries on-site.

Explore the Outdoors of Upper Cape Cod

When you think of Cape Cod, you think of the beaches. The beaches of the Upper Cape are unique stretches of coastline. This is especially so bay-side, where low tide reveals miles of flats that offer close encounters with Cape Cod’s marine life.

The upper Cape is also home to miles of bike paths, inland ponds, and wildlife sanctuaries. Calm interior waters invite paddleboarders, kayakers, and other low-impact watercraft.

Combine the food with plenty of opportunities to get out in the outdoors and learn about local ecology, and the upper Cape may be one of our favorite places to escape to in the summer months.

Read more about our favorite upper Cape destinations.

Anyone with a coffee obsession will feel at home at this cozy cafe. A rotating seasonal offerings including creative beverages such as ‘cowboy coffee’ and lavender Italian soda. With plenty of gluten free and vegetarian options on their humble, counter-style breakfast and lunch menu, folks with dietary restrictions will also feel welcome.

The Buffalo Jump

Falmouth

Founded by star chefs Brandon Baltzley (whose previous stints include Copenhagen’s Noma, no big deal) and wife Laura Higgins-Baltzley, The Buffalo Jump restaurant offers modern Cape Cod fare in the most rustic of settings. Located on Coonamessett Farm, The Buffalo Jump highlights native plants plucked fresh from the property. A favorite is chef Laura’s stuffed quahog benedict with bloody mary hollandaise and farm greens.

Coonamessett Farm

Falmouth

This 20-acre farm in the heart of Falmouth is committed to community through locally-sourced food and it shows. Browse the quintessential country market for local honey and homemade soaps, get a quick breakfast or lunch at the on-site restaurant The Buffalo Jump (see above), or get to work at the ‘pick-your-own’ section of the farm. There are plenty of adorable farm animals around, including baby goats in the early summer months.

Falmouth Farmers Market

Falmouth

The Falmouth Farmers Market conveniently brings together local farmers and vendors from the field and sea every Thursday in Marine Park, Falmouth from 12 to 5 p.m. You’ll find your typical farmers market fare as well as foods unique to Cape Cod including oysters from the sustainable Monks Cove Sea Farm.

Pie in the Sky

Falmouth

Pie in the Sky has been serving up organic coffee and homemade pastries and pies in the charming village of Wood’s Hole since 1982. Perfect for a fuel-up after a day on the Shining Sea Bikeway or before heading out on the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard.

Mashpee

White Lion Baking Company

Mashpee

Gluten-free eaters in the Boston area may recognize White Lion Baking Company products on the shelves of regional Whole Foods stores. Taken over by prominent Boston pastry chef Elizabeth Miles in 2021, the White Lion Baking Company has catered to a number of diets–paleo, keto, and gluten and dairy free–without sacrificing flavor. Stop by the store in Mashpee or order a custom celebration cake for your next soiree.

Rory’s Market + Kitchen

Mashpee

Skip the big box grocery stores and shop Rory’s Market + Kitchen, Cape Cod’s local organic and specialty food market. Conveniently stop by the Mashpee location for groceries and a healthy smoothie (the flagship store is in Dennis) while you’re perusing the Mashpee Commons.

Barnstable

Mass Audubon Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary

Barnstable

Gentle trails through wildflower fields and wooded thickets lead to a breathtaking view of Barnstable Harbor (particularly if you visit around sunset!) Across the harbor you’ll see the precariously placed Sandy Neck lighthouse on a barrier beach that protects the bay. Mass Audubon offers a variety of programming out of the Long Pasture Sanctuary, including kayak tours, boat cruises, and educational family experiences.

Full Face of 10 Clean Makeup Products with SPF Perfect for Summer

applying-serum-foundation-into-hand-with-dropper

Sunscreen is trending. In response, it seems beauty brands are continually finding new ways to add SPF to every makeup product these days.

Before high-performance SPF makeup, a day in the sun usually meant hiding under a baseball cap and pasty white sunscreen. A futile attempt at makeup in the summer heat typically ended up in a melted mess.

Now, makeup with SPF means you can stay safe and still turn a look–even at the beach or pool.

Why Wear SPF?

Gone are the days of tanning booths and sun bathing in baby oil (shout out to my millennials–WHY did we do this?!)

Personally, I’m here for it. Sunscreen protects the skin from harmful UV rays that can accelerate aging and cause skin cancer.

This is important in an age where it is expected that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation.

If you’re going to wear makeup while out in the sun, why not get some extra sun protection out of your products?

Makeup with SPF also offers protection in areas that your may typically miss with sunscreen, like the lips and eyelids.

Just a reminder: wearing makeup with SPF does not negate the need for a good base layer of sunscreen underneath your makeup!

Ultimate Car Camping Gear Checklist

fire-at-campsite

Car camping is a great place to start for beginner campers.

Car camping offers all of the benefits of time spent in nature, plus the convenience of all the stuff you can pack in your car (compared to what you can carry on your back–this is a lot!) Many camping sites even have showers and toilets–what luxury!

That being said, this doesn’t mean you don’t need to be strategic about car camping.

You can only fit so much in a car. After stuffing a cooler, tent, and a few chairs in the trunk, you may find yourself surprisingly strapped for space.

This checklist is also for beginner campers who are potentially nervous about their first time leaving the comforts of home behind. Being prepared can help ease any nerves, and save you the panic of realizing you left your charger at home.

Get the Printable Checklist

Download the full ultimate care camping checklist PDF here or read on.

Shelter

Tent

Unless you have a rooftop pop-up tent or are sleeping in the car, you’re going to need a tent. I recommend The North Face Eco Trail 2-Person Camping Tent.

Rainfly or tarp

Many tents will come with a rainfly to protect you from getting soaked in inclement weather. It’s good to double check you have one packed. It’s not a bad idea to bring along an extra tarp to set up outside the tent (perhaps over a picnic table) so you can spend some time outside despite the weather.

Sleeping mat

As the only thing between you and the cold, hard ground, the sleeping mat can be the difference between a good camping trip or a bad one. I like the VAUDE Tour 5 M – Self Inflating Sleeping Pad.

Sleeping bag

A cozy sleeping bag is a necessity, especially if you are expecting cooler nights. I love The North Face Eco Trail Down 0 sleeping bag, which is made of recycled materials and will keep you warm at zero degree temperatures.

Camping blanket

In the hot summer months, I like to forgo the sleep bag altogether for a lightweight, down camping blanket. The Rumpl Down Blanket is much cooler and is less restrictive than a sleeping bag.

Pillows

Honestly, I just bring my pillows from home for a car camping trip, but if you’re looking for something more compact check out the Trekology Ultralight Inflatable Camping Travel Pillow.

Lantern

You can’t flick on the lights when the sun goes down at the campsite. Don’t be left in the dark without a lantern like the classic Coleman CPX 6 Classic XL 700L LED Lantern.

Camp chairs

You’ll need some chairs to sit around the campfire. I like the camping chairs that are completely collapsible for easy storage and transport.

Hammock

Definitely not a necessity, but a hammock at the campsite takes lounging to a whole new level. Set up one of these hammocks between two trees and take an afternoon nap in the sun.

Camp Kitchen

Cooler

There’s no refrigeration in the bush, but with the right cooler and some ice you can store perishable items for at least a few days. (Yes, even meats and eggs if kept to temperature!) I like the OtterBox Venture Cooler for a weekend trip.

Grill

The beauty of car camping is you don’t have to stress about starting a fire. Instead, bring your fire with you with the Weber mini propane grill.

Fuel

If you’re not planning on using wood to build your own fire, you’ll need to plan on bringing fuel. If you’re using the Weber grill I recommend, stock up on a couple of canisters of liquid propane.

Fire starter

Every outdoor survival kit needs a good fire starter that won’t be affected by the elements or your ability to obtain fuel. I like the Wolf Grizzly Fire set, which consists of a ferro rod and striker–ensuring your ability to get a fire going in even the worst scenarios. For a simple car camping trip, bring a few fire starter sticks.

Pots

Bring some old pots and pans from home or get this 5-piece camp kitchen starter set.

Cast-iron pan

A must-have in the home kitchen, a cast-iron pan shows off over an open flame at the campsite as well.

Coffee gear

There’s nothing better than a cup of fresh coffee in the great outdoors. I usually just bring my French press when car camping (and pack it carefully!) but an Aeropress is a lightweight, plastic option that makes a great cup of coffee.

Mugs

Enamelware mugs are a lightweight option that are perfect for the campsite, but these mugs from Crow Canyon are also classy enough for the kitchen.

Can opener

You’re going to need a can opener to enjoy those refried beans.

Utensils

Skip the plastic and invest in a portable cutlery set you can also bring with your lunch at the office.

Knife

A sharp chef’s knife will be necessary for tougher jobs. This three-knife set covers about all you need for cooking at the campsite.

Cutting board

A cutting board is a necessity if you plan on cooking from scratch!

Spices

Life hack: pack your spices in a stackable pill dispenser.

Trash bags

Don’t litter! Make sure you take all your trash with you in these 100% recycled trash bags

Bucket, dish soap, sponge

I like this collapsible bucket for travel.

Gear

Headlamp

A headlamp is a must for those midnight bathroom trips in the middle of the woods.

Phone Charger

This camp-ready solar wireless charger comes with a battery that runs up to 36 hours and solar power backup.

Multitool

Cover your bases with a multitool that literally does it all.

Water filter

The Sawyer Micro Squeeze Water Filter allows you the ease and transportability of a regular water bottle, but it filters out bacteria, protozoa and other nasties.

First aid kit

You’re not fully packed for a camping trip without a first aid kit. It’s just the safe thing to do.

Toiletries

Biodegradable wipes

Spare your camping buds the stank with these handy biodegradable wipes

Sunscreen

Full days outside mean multiple reapplications of sunscreen head to toe!

Bug spray

When the sun goes down, the bugs come out. Oil of lemon eucalyptus insect repellent is effective and smells better than its chemical counterparts.

10 Gifts for Campers Who Love Sustainable Products

collage-of-eco-friendly-camping-gear

There is a huge overlap in the people who love camping and the people who care about sustainability. Unfortunately, so little of the traditional camping advice is given with sustainability in mind.

Single-use, plastic cutlery, individually packaged food items, toxic waterproof rain jackets–these are all items that are routinely recommended for a camping trip yet might cause an eco-minded camping buff to turn up their nose.

It’s not just the long-term effects of consumer waste we must consider (even when camping and presumably appreciating Mother Nature), but the short-term consequences of spoiling the last of our protected natural areas.

Not-so-fun-fact: that plastic fork you accidentally left at the campground will take over 20 years to decompose.

Instead, use this eco-friendly gift guide to shop for the camper in your life who has dedicated themselves to not only spending time in nature, but actively protecting it for generations to come.

North Face Recycled Sleeping Bags

The North Face Eco line of sleeping bags are made entirely from recycled materials, but they didn’t skimp on functionality. I have the Eco Trail Down 0 sleeping bag, which is meant to be comfortable at temperatures as low as zero degrees, but they have a full line of different temperate-rated bags. If you don’t love down, you can go with a fully synthetic sleeping bag. All are wide enough to allow for some wiggle room, but will fold up nicely in a pack.

VAUDE Tour 5 M – Self Inflating Sleeping Pad

Vaude is a German outdoor company that is unmatched in their commitment to sustainable manufacturing. Vaude has been a carbon neutral company since 2012 through solar, LED and carbon offset initiatives. Their line of sleeping pads are lightweight while maintaining comfort, allowing you to get a good night’s rest even on the most rocky terrain. Many of their sleeping mats also are lightweight enough for the trail.

The North Face Eco Trail 2-Person Camping Tent

Rest easy knowing this eco-friendly tent is made from entirely recycled materials. The vaulted ceiling gives the tent a roomy feel for two people. The included rain fly will keep you dry, while the innovative high-low ventilation system will keep you cool on warmer nights.

The North Face Women’s Dryzzle FUTURELIGHT™ Jacket

Toxin-Free The North Face Futurelight Rain Jacket

Most waterproof materials are made through the use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl chemicals (PFASs), which can cause trouble during the manufacturing process when manufacturing runoff enters the ecosystem–particularly the water supply. Exposure to PFASs has been associated with all kinds of health issues, from breast cancer to immune system damage. Not great! The North Face has been a pioneering brand in the production of outdoor equipment that skips the perfluorinated chemicals to achieve their waterproofing.

Emberlit Stainless Steel Backpacking Stove

This innovative backpacking stove allows you to skip packing the cumbersome fuel and use what’s available from Mother Nature as kindling. To use the backpacking stove, create a mini fire with some twigs and sticks underneath your pot and have a fully cooked meal within minutes. Plus, the Emberlight Stove is fully collapsible and will not take up any more room in your backpack.

Stainless Steel Cutlery Set

Skip the plastic cutlery and keep your fork, knife and spoon on you at all times at the campsite with this portable set. Made from lightweight stainless steel, this cutlery set is completely washable and will last a lifetime. This cutlery set will ensure you truly ‘leave no trace’ the next time you’re dining in the great outdoors.

Beeswrap Natural Food Wrap

Great for the kitchen and the campsite, Beeswrap Natural Food Wraps mean you can skip the plastic packaging when packing food for a camping trip. Homemade granola bars? Cured meats? Dessert? They can all be stored safely for travel in these mess-free wraps that are lined with all-natural beeswax. Secure your snacks in a Beeswrap and throw them in your backpack for hikes!

Camping Recipe Book

Premade single-use meals are not sustainable and, perhaps more importantly, not tasty. Learning to cook at the campsite (whether that be on a grill or over an open flame) is an important skill for any camper. This book of 100 easy camp meals will ensure you never go hungry on the trail.

Solar Wireless Phone Charger

Most of us go out into nature to escape the demands of modern technology, but we also need Google Maps to get us home from the campsite. Ensure your phone stays charged until the end of the trail with ToughTested® ROC Waterproof 10,000mAh Solar Wireless Charger. This solar charger provides up to four full charges from its power bank and comes with a 280mA solar charger as backup.

Pop-up Camp Recycle Bin

This handy pop-up recycle bin ensures you’ll never accidentally leave behind trash at the campsite again (and the wildlife thanks you!) The bin folds flats for easy storage and won’t take up any space in your car on the way out into the great outdoors.

10 Edible Flowers to Experiment With in the Kitchen

table-spread-with-cocktails-and-violas

Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine for the soul.

LUTHER BURBANK, BOTANIST

When American botanist Luther Burbank said flowers are “sunshine, food and medicine for the soul” I think he meant it in the metaphorical sense, but I wonder if he also considered flowers as literal food.

It’s true–flowers are a pleasure to behold, but many of them are also a pleasure to eat!

That’s right, you can have your flowers and eat them too.

Why Eat Flowers

Edible flowers are not just beautiful, they are also high in vitamins and polyphenols and a healthy addition to meals.

From a culinary perspective, you can have endless fun in the kitchen experimenting with edible flowers. Flavors run the gamut from sweet to pungent and peppery.

How to Eat Flowers

Edible flowers have been a welcome addition to my garden this year.

After I’ve sufficiently admired them in their respective flower beds, I pluck the blossoms and add to salads, confections and cocktails. Read on for more ideas specific to the type of flower.

Violets frozen in ice cubes for cocktails. Photo by Caroline the Photographer.

How to Source Edible Flowers

You can find edible flowers at farmers markets and some specialty grocery stores during the spring and summer months while the flowers are in bloom.

Other edible flowers listed below grow wild. You can forage these wild flowers across temperate regions across the world, e.g. dandelion, violet and rosa rugosa.

Finally, my favorite way to source edible flowers is to grow them! Grow your own edible flowers annually from seed. I like Hudson Valley Seed Co.’s Edible Flower Mix.

Favorite Edible Flowers to Cook With in the Kitchen

Arugula

Many greens will produce edible flowers if you let them, but arugula’s white blossoms are particularly charming. The flavor mirrors that of the plant’s peppery leaves and is a perfect topping to a salad. Imagine your next strawberry-arugula salad with a sprinkling of white petals.

Borage

Also known as starflower, borage has long been admired for its blue pentacle blooms and use in herbal medicine. Borage may reduce inflammation, and has been shown to promote skin and respiratory health. Try drying the flowers and using them in your next cup of herbal tea.

Cornflower

Perhaps best known for their use as a pigment and vibrant blue color, cornflower also makes for a delectable edible flower. Their color makes cornflower an obvious choice for floral tea, while their clove-like flavor makes them an excellent garnish for baked goods.

Dandelions

Instead of embarking on futile attempts of ridding your lawn of these ‘weeds’, why not try eating them? Eat dandelion early in the spring when they are young and have a delicate, sweet flavor. Add them to a salad of dandelion greens to make use of the entire plant.

Day lilies

Perhaps the heartiest of the edible flowers, use day lilies in cooking much like you would squash or zucchini blossoms (AKA stuffed with cheese!) The full blooms also are show-stopping atop cakes and dramatic desserts. Make sure you are working with day lilies though–not all lilies are edible.

Dianthus

The dianthus genus includes the well-known carnation, and is surprisingly (to most people!) edible. Also known as ‘pinks,’ both the color and the flavor of these flowers lend themselves to confections. Steeped the sweet petals in wines or candy them to top your next dessert.

Marigold

Marigolds are ubiquitous in the fall here in New England, but did you know their autumnal blooms are also edible? Marigold has a lovely citrus flavor. Use marigold as a substitute for saffron or as a tasty addition to lemony salads.

Nasturtium

The orange blossoms of the nasturtium are best in savory applications due to their peppery flavor. Add nasturtium to your next charcuterie board, open-faced sandwich or salad dressing.

Rose

All rose varieties are edible (make sure you get pesticide-free!), but my favorite happens to be the wild beach rose (Rosa rugosa) that is abundant along the New England coast. Different varieties will have different flavor profiles (from sweet to tart to mildly spicy) but all lend themselves nicely to sweet treats. Try making rose petal jam.

Enjoying a cocktail made with violet simple syrup. Photo by Caroline the Photographer.

Violet/Viola

Delicate violet blossoms are always a welcome sign of spring. Violet has a sweet, almost grape-like flavor that matches its purple blooms. Try making a violet simply syrup for your next French 75 or Aviation cocktail.
