Sustainable Fall Fashion Ideas for 2021

Load Metrics (uses 8 credits) KEYWORD biggest sustainable brands

Fall, the indisputable best fashion season of the year, is finally here! Looking for some sustainable fall fashion ideas and inspiration? Get ready, it’s time to break out the booties, flannel and pumpkin spice.

Or is it?

Listen, I love a good flannel as much as the next basic B, but I also wanted to share some creative sustainable fall fashion ideas that are a little outside the box.

I don’t know about you, but I get a little bored with the same looks year after year. Hopefully this blog post will inspire you to try something new!

This post is all about sustainable fall fashion.

Sustainable Fall Fashion Inspiration

These looks call on current 2021 fashion trends and inspiration from academia, the ’90s and yes, even some fall classics.

I also prioritized looks that transition well from summer to fall, pieces that can be worn multiple different ways (yes, rewearing is ultimate sustainability!), and LAYERS.

(Fall is all about layers to me, as you never know what freakin’ temperature it’s going to be.)

What is Sustainable Fall Fashion?

Below I’ve included pieces I have rented from clothing rental services Nuuly and Rent the Runway. Renting can be a more sustainable option as it slows production and keeps clothes out of landfills. Plus, you can go for the statement piece without the commitment!

I’ve also shared brands that have made some commitment to sustainability, although none are perfect and all fall along a spectrum. I’ve included some bigger brands as well as smaller indie designers.

Let’s get started!

1. Sustainable Fall Outfit: Babydoll Dress + Boots + Baseball Hat

I’m obsessed with this gingham babydoll dress by Tach Clothing, which is a smaller brand started by two sisters and whose pieces are ethically handmade with love in their native Uruguay.

It’s a perfect transition dress from summer to fall, because it’s lightweight enough to be worn alone on a hot day (I wore this dress to multiple baby showers this summer) but can also be paired with high black leather boots and tights for chillier days.

Here I’ve paired the gingham dress with faux leather boots and a baseball hat for a laidback vibe on a warmer fall day.

Get the Look:

You can rent the Tach Clothing gingham babydoll dress on Nuuly or buy it on their site here.

2. Sustainable Fall Fashion: Plaid Coat + Wide-Leg Jeans

This plaid coat from sustainable brand M.i.h. Jeans made me feel like a professor in the ’70s strolling the campus between lectures in a very good way.

(M.i.h. Jeans is, you guess it, a denim company that is focused on responsible sourcing and manufacturing. They happen to also make a damn fine wool coat!)

The coat is a wool blend made from 75% wool, so it is sure to keep you warm on chillier fall days. Wear it over a plain white or fun vintage tee.

Pair the ’70s academia feel of the coat with light-wash wide-leg jeans. This pair from Zara that I thrifted from Poshmark have rips at the knees, which modernizes the look a little bit.

Get the Look:

You can rent the Plaid Ryley Coat from Rent the Runway.

3. Sustainable Fall Fashion Outfit: Plaid Shirt Dress

More plaid?! Listen, I did warn you I was a basic fall girl at heart.

This plaid jacquard shirt dress from Zero + Maria Cornejo features a high collar and curved long sleeves. Secret side slits give an otherwise modest dress a bit of an edge.

I think this dress would also look amazing with a statement black belt at the waist.

This dress is made with completely natural materials: 70% wool and 28% cotton to be exact. Be careful though, wool is warm but it can feel a bit scratchy! I might wear a cotton turtleneck under this dress, especially on colder days.

Zero + Maria Cornejo as a brand are committed to responsible design and manufacturing, designing and producing all their clothing locally in New York. They also make a point to use up-cycled and eco-friendly textiles.

Get the Look:

You can rent the Camisa Dress by Zero + Maria Cornejo from Rent the Runway.

4. Sustainable Fall Fashion: Gingham Wool Suit

Mara Hoffman is one of my favorite designers, ya’ll. Not only does she prioritize natural, sustainable, and often organic textiles, she also produces some of the most bold and joy-inducing clothing on the runway right now.

Speaking of bold, how about trying a completely matching wool gingham set this fall?

I tried this with nothing underneath on top, but to tone down the matchy-ness you could wear with a statement vintage tee.

Blazer is made with 100$ boiled wool, while the bottoms are 100% organic cotton.

Get the Look:

You can rent Mara Hoffman designs on Rent the Runway. Rent the Tatum Blazer here and the Gingham Dita Pants here.

5. Sustainable Fall Fashion Outfit: Plaid Duster + Tee Shirt + Knit Skirt

Remember that Zero + Maria Cornejo dress from earlier? Here it is again, completely unbuttoned and worn as a duster!

That is a major reason I love the brand Zero + Maria Cornejo, a lot of their pieces are designed with versatility in mind.

We love versatility because it’s fall and the weather is constantly changing, but we also love it for sustainability reasons. If you can wear a piece a multitude of different ways, you are much more likely to rewear and not get bored.

And you know what the most sustainable clothing option always is? Answer: what you already have in your closet!

Get the Look:

You can rent the Camisa Dress by Zero + Maria Cornejo from Rent the Runway.

How to Make Candied Edible Flowers for Cakes and Other Desserts

Candied edible flowers are such a simple way to bring the beauty of common flowers from your garden into the kitchen and elevate any dessert.

When we think of home gardening, we tend to think of vegetables and herbs as utilitarian (they feed us after all) and flowers as strictly ornamental.

This couldn’t be further from the truth! There are many edible flowers that can offer us a wide ranges from flavors, from sweet to spicy.

As such, edible flowers can be incorporated into all types of meals, but I think their beauty and delicacy most naturally lend themselves to dessert.

Of course, you could slap a fresh flower onto a cake and call it a day (that could be lovely) but the candying process allows you to preserve and store the flowers for months. Plus the coating of sugar gives the flower a stunning frosted effect!

I definitely want to live in a world where I casually have candied flowers in the fridge for whenever the mood to make a cake that looks like it might have been made by fairies may strike.

This post is all about candied edible flowers.

Types of Edible Flowers

There are many types of edible flowers that would be perfect to use here for your candied edible flowers.

Some common edible flowers you make have in your garden right now that are beautiful candied include rose, marigold, nasturtium, cornflower, and violet or viola

Materials You Need for Candied Edible Flowers

Before you get started, you’re going to need a few materials:

  • Small paintbrush
  • Drying rack
  • Bowls
  • Whisk

Ingredients

1 Egg White

Vodka

1/2 cup fine white sugar

75-100 flowers depending on size, stems and leaves removed

How to Make Candied Edible Flowers – Step-By-Step

1. In a small bowl or ramekin, whisk the egg white with about 1 teaspoon of vodka until some bubbles form and the mixture becomes somewhat frothy. Note: You can use water in place of vodka, but I like vodka because it evaporates faster.

2. Pick up a flower by the small stalk that would connect the flower to the rest of the plant. Alternatively, you can candy individual petals. This works especially well for bigger flowers like rose and nasturtium.

3. Dip the paintbrush into the egg white mixture and paint onto the petals, coating the entire flower, front and back.

4. Coat the flower in sugar. There are a few ways you can do this. You can either pour sugar from a bowl on top of the flower, with a plate or something beneath to catch the excess. The easier way I have found is to simply dunk the flower into the bowl of sugar to coat. Again, make sure the flower is entirely coated in sugar–front and back.

5. Lay your coated flower onto a drying rack (I use a cooling rack I would normally use for cookies, etc.)

6. Repeat this process until you use all your picked flowers or you become bored.

7. Let flowers sit a few hours or overnight to dry.

8. Top your favorite dessert with your beautiful candied edible flowers!

Candied flowers can store up to three months in an airtight container in the fridge.

11 Insane Non Toxic Hair Products That Will Give You Perfect Hair

Looking for non toxic hair products that will actually perform?

Are you totally done with overly fragranced sprays and gels that leave your hair brittle and dull?

While this is not going to be an in-depth list of ingredients to avoid, while I’m here I might at well remind folks: when you see “fragrance” listed on the ingredients list of a cosmetic product, it is actually a blanket term that could actually be a combination of potentially toxic chemicals.

Conventional fragrance is known to be irritating to many, even causing migraines.

Also, many conventional hair products, although they may look like they’re working the first couple uses, do even dry and dull out your hair due to ingredients like alcohol and dimethicone.

Well, anyway, look no further because we put several non toxic hair products to the test to share our favorites for healthy, shiny hair.

This post is all about non toxic hair products for perfect hair.

For the Zero-Waste Stickler

Acure Bar Shampoo

Eco Friendly Christmas Tree Ideas to Make Your Home Cheery and Bright

eco friendly christmas tree decorations

Is there such a thing as an eco friendly Christmas tree? A Christmas tree is a holiday staple for those that celebrate, but the thought of cutting an innocent evergreen down may be enough to make the tree-huggers among us shudder.

There are 25 to 30 million Christmas trees sold each year in the U.S. That certainly seems like a lot of timber for a mere decoration that sits in our home for a few weeks out of the year and then is burned in a bonfire or hauled off on trash day.

But, what is the alternative? A plastic artificial tree that will end up in a landfill someday?

(If you’re new to sustainability, spoiler alert: plastics are almost never the answer.)

Add to this the tacky ornaments, plastic tinsel, and faulty light bulbs and the traditional Christmas tree suddenly appears the opposite of sustainable.

But, there is another way! While nothing we consume for just the holiday season can ever be fully sustainable, there are greener options we can consider when choosing and decorating a Christmas tree.

I will concede there’s nothing like bringing fresh greenery into your home in the dead of winter to raise the cozy vibes. I love snuggling up with a cup of hot chocolate and admiring the twinkling lights on a winter night.

Read on for some eco friendly Christmas tree ideas for your coziest (and greenest!) holiday season yet.

This post is all about eco friendly Christmas tree ideas and inspiration.

Are Real Christmas Trees Sustainable?

A common question from the eco-curious around the holidays is whether a real or artificial tree is more sustainable. It can seem so cruel to cut down a tree! Aren’t we against cutting down forest?

The truth is that most Christmas trees are grown on relatively small family farms.

Moreover, the types of trees that fall into the Christmas tree category often grow in rocky, poor soil that is otherwise inhospitable for agriculture.

They tend to be similar enough to what would naturally grow in their areas and provide habitat while they are growing up to become marketable Christmas trees.

It takes 6-8 years to grow a tree to market size. And, after a tree is cut, most tree farms will just replace it with a new planting. The cycle continues.

All this to say that cutting down a real tree to put in your home is not the most unsustainable practice, especially if you are choosing one from your local family-run farm. Otherwise, you need to factor in the miles that tree may have traveled to get to your door, and at what cost.

Overall, I’m team real Christmas tree. It sure beats a plastic tree that will end up in a landfill one day.

Potted Live Christmas Tree – Eco Friendly Christmas Tree Alternatives

Decorate Your Indoor Plants Instead – Sustainable Christmas Tree Alternatives

If the thought of cutting down a tree makes you cringe, consider bringing a live tree into your home this holiday season.

You can water and care for in it while it’s potted indoors for a few weeks, and then give it a second life and plant outdoors after Christmas.

You can definitely decorate your living tree, just be sure to use smaller bulbs if using Christmas lights, as too much heat can hurt a younger tree.

If you don’t have the green thumb or space to plant a tree outdoors, you can rent a Christmas tree!

Seriously, there are several companies that will lend you an evergreen for the holiday season and take it back to the nursery when you’re done. You can also check with your local nursery to see if they offer this service.

Thrift or Vintage Christmas Tree – Eco Friendly Christmas Tree Alternatives

If there are no local tree farms near you, or greenery just isn’t your thing, the next most sustainable option is to thrift an artificial tree.

I have to admit, some vintage artificial trees are really cool. I feel like, if you’re going artificial, really lean into it and go with a zany color, like this aluminum silver tree.

Dried Fruit Garlands – Eco Friendly Christmas Decorations

Sustainable tree decorations and garlands are easy and fun to make at home.

There are several decorations you can make with food items you probably have in the fridge or pantry!

For example, try drying thinly-sliced citrus fruit (orange, lemon, graprefuit) or apple slices in a dehydrator or oven.

How To Dry Citrus Fruits

  1. Preheat oven to 200° F.
  2. Cut orange (or other citrus) slices 1/4-1/8″ thick.
  3. Place on a baking tray. I like to place an over-safe cooling rack on the baking tray to allow for the best airflow.
  4. Allow oranges (or other citrus) to dry in the oven for 2-3 hours.
  5. String slices along twine to make a garland, or hook with wire/string to make each slice an individual ornament!

If you’re not feeling too crafty you can always just buy the materials, like dehydrated orange slices, to create a cozy Christmas garland that is completely biodegradable.

Cinnamon Stick Ornaments – Eco Friendly Christmas Tree Decorations

Ornaments are often made from materials that can’t be recycled, and will therefore probably end up in a landfill one day.

Opt for more sustainable Christmas tree ornaments made from natural materials, like cinnamon stick bundles instead!

Just try up five cinnamon sticks with some rustic twine (and maybe some greenery or wooden bauble) and hang on your tree with care!

After you use the cinnamon sticks as decoration, you can repurpose them in your tea or simmer them on the stovetop and allow the cozy scent of cinnamon to fill your home.

Recycled Christmas Tree Cuttings – Eco Friendly Christmas Tree

Maybe crafting isn’t your *thing* but you still want to bling out your Christmas tree with some ornaments that won’t hurt the Earth.

I love these ornaments that are actually made on a family-run Christmas tree farm in Georgia using the tree trunk cuttings.

You can even request a custom ornament with a hand painted message or design!

17+ Ethical Christmas Gifts for Everyone on Your List

Looking for ethical Christmas gifts this year and don’t know where to start? We have you covered with this comprehensive gift guide for everyone on your list.

We talk a lot about sustainability on this blog, and often make recommendations for more sustainable products. However, we don’t always talk about the related concept of ethical products.

You may assume that ‘ethical’ and ‘sustainable’ mean about the same thing with regards to consumer goods.

They are related terms, and ideally you are shopping for products that are both ethical and sustainable.

However, ethical products have some important distinctions.

This post is all about ethical Christmas gifts.

Ethical vs. Sustainable

Ethically-made goods are those that consider the people that make those goods.

An item may be considered ethical if the artisans or workers who made it are paid a living wage, work in decent conditions, have access to loans for their small businesses, etc.

On the other hand, sustainability refers more to the raw materials and manufacturing processes used to make those goods, and whether those practices can be maintained long-term without posing a threat to the environment.

Of course, ethics and sustainability are interrelated.

For example, it is both ethical and sustainable to move away from the use of toxic dyes in the textile industry. Workers are protected from harmful exposures and the surrounding environment is spared from toxic byproducts.

Thrifted Halloween Costumes That You’ll Want to Wear Year-Round

These thrifted Halloween costumes are super cute and don’t contribute to the tons of waste generated every October 31st by throwaway clothing.

Literally, tons. One study conducted in the UK estimated that Halloween costumes alone generated about 2,000 tons of plastic waste every year.

Instead, these costumes are easily found at your local thrift store and incorporate styles you’ll want to wear throughout the year.

I take Halloween very seriously. In fact, I have a note in my phone where I jot down Halloween costume ideas throughout the year.

For bonus points, I try to incorporate thrifted or vintage clothing and jewelry items I may be shopping for anyway! That way, I know I’ll definitely wear the pieces again.

I also use clothing rental subscriptions to like Nuuly and Rent the Runway to source clothing for Halloween without the commitment.

This post is all about thrifted Halloween costumes.

Olivia Rodrigo – Sour Album Cover

Turn the album of the year into the Halloween costume of the year. All you need is a Y2K inspired pink, fuzzy tank top and some fun stickers. Stick out your tongue (in a cheeky way) for photos throughout the night.

Get the look:

Princess Diana

A style icon before her time, Princess Diana is often cited as the inspiration for modern athleisure looks, including the ubiquitous pairing of a crew neck and bike shorts. This one is so easy to recreate, just throw on your alma mater crew neck sweatshirt, bike shorts, and dad sneakers and try to avoid the paparazzi.

Harry Styles in Watermelon Sugar Music Video

All you need to recreate Harry’s iconic ’70s-inspired look in the Watermelon Sugar music video is a crochet vest and some funky sunglasses. For bonus points, pair with watermelon accessories, or you know, an actual watermelon. We love a Halloween costume that incorporates a snack!

Lady Gaga in House of Gucci

The movie hasn’t even come out yet, and images of Lady Gaga and Adam Driver as Patrizia and Maurizio Gucci in the forthcoming House of Gucci have already rocked the internet. The apres-ski scene particularly makes for a great couples costume.

For Lady Gaga’s character, you’ll need a black turtleneck, white fur hat and layers of gaudy jewelry. Adam Driver’s Maurizio Gucci will just need a cream sweater and ’80s glasses.

Fran Drescher in The Nanny

The ’90s sitcom The Nanny has come back into the cultural zeitgeist for its fashion. Star Fran Drescher is often wearing bold designer suits.

If vintage Moschino is out of your price range (yes, hi, me too) you might be able to approximate the look with some good thrifting skills. Bold prints and skirt suits fit the bill.

Stevie Nicks

You could go as a basic witch for Halloween, or you could go as the real-life badass witch of Fleetmac Mac fame. To become Stevie Nicks, thrift an all-black flowy ensemble and maybe a top hat. Be generous with the jewelry.

Clueless

As if! Recreate Alicia Silverstone’s iconic Dolce & Gabbana suit with a yellow plaid blazer and skirt if you can find it. Don’t forget the knee socks and attitude!

Kacey Musgraves

There are so many iconic looks to choose from the country singer’s repertoire, but when I think Kacey I think rhinestone cowboy hat and raven black hair. Pair with anything sparkly, pink or red and pick up a guitar!

Harry Styles at the Grammys

In my humble opinion, Harry Styles is single-handedly bringing the boa from cheap party favor to en-vogue. Recreate his 2021 Grammys look with head-to-toe black leather and a green boa.

Boas are surprising thrift-able, as people typically buy them for parties and never wear them again. I found mine in my local buy-nothing group (another thrifting hack!)

The Love Witch

If you haven’t seen the 2016 cult classic, The Love Witch, I recommend adding it to your spooky season watch list. It’s a witchy horror movie shot through the female gaze. The looks in this movie alone could kill. A red dress, blue eyeshadow and a tarot deck is all you need to replicate The Love Witch poster look.

This post was all about thrifted Halloween costumes.

The Best Sustainable Christmas Decorations for an Insanely Cute and Cozy Christmas

sustainable christmas decorations

Want to incorporate more sustainable Christmas decorations into your holiday planning this year but don’t know where to start? These Christmas decor ideas are not only eco-friendly, but they are also insanely cute.

According to Stanford University, Americans throw away 25% more trash in the time between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve than any other time of the year.

That’s 7 million pounds of wrapping paper, ribbons, and yes, even Christmas decorations.

The problem with many traditional Christmas decorations are they are single-use, made from cheap plastics, and not easily recycled. Let’s face it, many Christmas decorations are headed for the landfill.

Luckily, your Christmas decoration game does not have to suffer by going the more sustainable route. There are plenty of sustainable Christmas decorations that are insanely cute and cozy. Plus, eco-friendly decor tends to give that hygge aesthetic that is all the rage right now.

If you are looking for sustainable Christmas decorations and ideas, you have come to the right place. From stunning Christmas decoration ideas to my favorite eco-friendly decor to buy, this post will inspire you to have the coziest Christmas ever.

This post is all about sustainable Christmas decorations.

1. Potted Christmas Tree

Most cut Christmas trees are actually grown on small, family-run tree farms in otherwise infertile and rocky soils. Most farms replace the trees that they cut. In other words, your traditional cut Christmas tree is probably not the most unsustainable Christmas decoration, but there are alternatives for you tree-huggers out there.

Instead of a cut Christmas tree, consider a potted tree you can plant outside after it’s done its duty as holiday decor. You can definitely decorate your young tree, just be sure to use smaller bulbs if using Christmas lights, as too much heat can hurt the tree.

2. Christmas Plants

If you don’t have the space for a Christmas tree, consider getting creative with indoor potted plants. I have put Christmas ornaments on my indoor potted palm, and it looked very cute.

You can even arrange your potted plants on a stool or ladder in the shape of a tree and decorate accordingly. In the same vein, there are Pinterest tutorials to create a Christmas tree out of succulents!

3. Eco-Friendly DIY Tree Decorations

Sustainable tree decorations and garlands are easy and fun to make at home. There are several decorations you can make with food items you probably have in the fridge or pantry!

For example, try drying thinly-sliced orange or apple slices in a dehydrator or oven (on the lowest heat for about 2-3 hours). String the slices along a string to make a garland.

  5. String along twine to make a garland or hook with wire to make each slice an individual ornament!

If you’re not feeling too crafty you can always just buy the materials, like dehydrated orange slices, to create a cozy Christmas garland that is completely biodegradable.

4. Sustainable Christmas Tree Ornaments

Ornaments are often made from materials that can’t be recycled, and will therefore probably end up in a landfill one day. Often for more sustainable Christmas tree ornaments made from natural materials, like these cinnamon stick bundles.

After you use the cinnamon sticks as decoration, you can repurpose them in your tea or simmer them on the stovetop and allow the cozy scent of cinnamon to fill your home.

5. Zero-Waste Christmas Candles

Most candles are made with paraffin wax, a byproduct of the petroleum industry that has been shown to release harmful chemicals like toluene and benzene. Luckily, there are other more healthy options, like soy, coconut and beeswax.

Place a beeswax votive candle in a mason jar (to be repurposed, of course!) and decorate with some foraged materials like pine and spruce for a cute DIY Christmas candle.

6. Sustainable Mantle Decor

Make sure your ‘stockings hung by the fire with care’ are made from sustainable materials that can be reused or recycled. One of my favorite eco-friendly textiles is linen, as it is produced with less water and chemical waste (especially if you skip the dye) than most fabrics.

Plus, these cozy linen stockings lend a beautiful minimalist vibe to your Christmas decorations.

7. Recyclable Wrapping Paper

Not all wrapping paper can be recycled. Wrapping paper that contains glitter, sequins, sparkles, foil, or plastics plastics cannot be recycled. When choosing a wrapping paper, make sure to prioritize those that can be recycled. Bonus points if the paper is both recycled and recyclable!

We love the classy, neutral look of plain, brown Kraft paper for wrapping. Dress it up with some twine and a few sprigs of spruce or a pine cone, and you have some beautifully wrapped gifts.

8. Eco-Friendly Wrapping Paper Alternatives

Of course, you could skip buying wrapping paper altogether and consider some eco-friendly wrapping paper alternatives. Try reusing wrapping paper (yes, it can be done if not torn to shreds!) using newspaper, or children’s art.

I love the look of the Japanese art of fabric wrapping called furoshiki. Try your hand at furoshiki with this beautiful hemp cloth.

9. Sustainable Paper Tape

Just like wrapping paper, not all tape is created equal in terms of sustainability. (In fact, make sure you remove all tape from wrapping paper before you recycle! Too much tape or any ribbons and bows will render your paper non-recyclable!)

Consider paper tape in lieu of plastic tape, which can be recyclable and biodegradable.

10. Homemade Wreath

Why buy a fake plastic wreath when you can make a beautiful, natural one yourself?

We love the cozy, minimalist vibe of these hoop wreaths. Creating one for yourself is as simple as using craft wire to attach greenery like pine or spruce to an embroidery or macrame ring.

11. Eco-friendly Table Setting

Go Scandinavian with your sustainable table setting, and incorporate natural materials like boughs of pine and cranberries for a pop of color.

In lieu of disposable plates we love handmade ceramic dinnerware for a cozy feel. Also, we love linen, so be sure to pick up some linen napkins.

12. DIY Christmas Garlands

Save your money on plastic decorations and ornaments that only see daylight once a year. Instead, decorate your home with natural garlands. Unlike tinsel and plastic baubles, these beauties are biodegradable.

You can either make them completely edible and use popcorn and cranberries, or make your own classic garlands from pine.

13. Recyclable Paper Christmas Banner

If you’re dead set on having decorations that live in the attic and come down once a year, at least make sure they are biodegradable. For that purpose, I love paper like these Christmas banners.

This paper banner offers such a cozy vibe to a living room and would look great on a mantle.

13 Sustainable Denim Brands That Make Jeans You’ll Actually Want to Wear

sustainable-denim

Want to incorporate sustainable denim into your wardrobe but don’t know where to look? These are the sustainable denim brands that make jeans that not only are on-trend, but are better for you and the planet.

Transitioning to a more sustainable wardrobe can be confusing. How do you even know what is sustainable?

All the greenwashing these days makes these choices even trickier.

When I became interested in more sustainable clothing, I didn’t even know what material denim is made from (Spoiler alert: it’s cotton. More on that later.)

You’ve picked a great place to start because denim is a wardrobe staple that can be easily upgraded by buying the right brands who are committed to sustainable practices.

Lucky for you, we’ve rounded up all our favorite sustainable denim brands that make trendy and adorable jeans.

This post is all about sustainable denim brands that make jeans you’ll actually want to wear.

What is Sustainable Denim?

Before we dive into our recommendations, let’s talk about how we define sustainable denim.

Denim is made with cotton, which unfortunately is not the most sustainable raw material to begin with.

Sustainable Denim Uses Less Water

Cotton takes a lot of water to grow, yet is often grown in hot and dry areas of the world where water is a limited resource.

We prioritize denim brands that acknowledge this reality and make efforts to reduce their water consumption in the manufacturing process.

Sustainable Denim Avoids Pesticide Use

Cotton is often also grown as a GMO crop and sprayed with harmful pesticides.

According to CottonUP, an organization working to make the cotton business more sustainable, cotton occupies 2.5% of the world’s arable land yet is subjected 10% of all pesticide and chemical fertilizer use.

The excessive use of pesticides and fertilizers is a health hazard to workers and the communities that grow cotton.

For these reasons, sustainable denim is also ideally made with organic cotton and fair-trade certified.
