9 Essential Gardening Tools for Beginners

best gardening tools

Starting your gardening journey can be overwhelming. These essential gardening tools will help you grow flowers, herbs and veggies like a pro (even if you aren’t–yet!)

I remember when I started my first little 4×8′ raised bed garden my sad-looking backyard I had a lot of question about whether I had the tools I needed to grow food for my partner and I.

Surely this gardening thing required a lot of fancy tools, didn’t it?!

I didn’t have the resources I needed at the time, so I scattered a bunch of seeds in some soil and waited.

To my surprise, I was able to grow a pretty decent first harvest that year. The truth is, gardening doesn’t require a ton of specialized and expensive tools, especially if you’re starting on a smaller scale (as I did, and as I recommend!)

Still, things didn’t go exactly as planned and I still had a lot of learning to do. Today, I have a few trusty tools I recommend based on years of practice growing food in the city.

With a few reliable, versatile tools, you’ll be well on your way in your gardening journey.

This post is all about essential gardening tools for the beginner gardener.

Who This Post is For – Gardening Tools for Beginners

The gardening tool recommendations are made with the beginner gardener in mind, i.e. someone who is just starting out on their journey and is starting from scratch.

That being said, I would recommend these tools to any gardener looking to invest in the best tools for the job.

These are the tools I would choose if I could only garden with nine tools for the rest of my life.

Also, these tools are intended for urban, suburban and small-scale gardeners looking to grow food for their family. You will not see tools for meadow, forest, or larger scale operations, for example.

With those disclaimers, let’s dive in to the best gardening tools!

Essential Gardening Tools

Pruner With Comfort Gel Grips by Corona Clippers

These pruning shears are versatile enough to handle a variety of jobs, from cutting a bouquet of the most delicate flowers, to cutting back leathery old squash vines at the end of the season.

The Corona Comfort Gel Grip Pruning Shears are designed with your comfort in mind. Not only are they comfortable to grip, but they come with an adjustable gauge to adjust the clippers to your unique hand-size. No more hand fatigue (especially for my folks with smaller hands!)

Don’t let their comfort fool you though, these clippers can handle some pretty heavy-duty jobs, and can cut up to 3/4 of an inch.

Leather Gardening Gloves by Bamllum

Gardening gloves aren’t just a chance to protect your manicure in the garden, they are also for your comfort.

The right pair of gardening gloves can protect your skin from irritation (like from prickly radish leaves), dermatitis and allergic reactions (ask me about how I found out I was allergic to hops), and pruning.

You’ll want especially thick gloves if you’re going to be doing any work around especially problematic plants like nettles. (I wear my thick leather gloves foraging too!)

Plus, how cute are these patterns?!

These ones not the gloves for you? Check out my round-up of super cute gardening gloves here!

Hori Hori AKA Gardening Knife by Nisaku

The hori hori AKA the garden knife is the best little-known gardening tool here in the US.

This Japanese gardening tool is the ultimate multi-tasker, simultaneously acting as a trowel, knife or even a measuring stick. That’s right, this hori hori comes with depth measurement so you know exactly how deep you’re planting your seeds and bulbs.

With the knife edge of this tool, you can easily cut back branches and vines, as well as dig and cut out old roots. A hori hori is especially essential if you want to practice no-dig gardening, as its precision allows you to remove old root systems without distubing the soil.

You can even use the knife to cut open the fruits of your labor (pun intended) after a long day of gardening!

Handheld Transplanter by Burgon & Ball

A garden knife like the one talked about above can handle most jobs, but sometimes you want something just a little gentler.

And nothing requires a gentle touch more than transplanting delicate seedlings.

Transplanting simply means moving a plant from one area to another–often from indoors, where it was started from seed, to outdoors, where it will harden off and live out the rest of its days.

Tranplanting seedlings is an especially delicate job, and this handheld transplanter by Burgon & Ball is up to the task.

Simply sink the head of the tool in the soil parallel to and a few inches from your seedling, and push on the handle to lever the seedling from its home. Pop the seedling in it’s new home, feed it some fertilizer and watch it grow!

Heavy-Duty Garden Hose by Flexilla

Vegetable gardens need a shocking amount of water, so you need a good garden hose to keep up with demand.

If you’re not going to install a drip irrigation system, it’s imperative you invest in a good garden hose because you’ll be spending a good amount of time watering your garden (i.e. daily). Believe me, nothing is worse than wrestling with your garden hose every time you go to water!

This hose by Flexilla is made of a special polymer that is especially flexible and durable, so that it doesn’t kink or leak. It’s also easy to coil and hang up at the end of your session.

Garden Hose Nozzle by MAXFLO

While we’re talking about watering your garden, you’ll also need a nozzle for your garden hose that offers a variety of settings. The water coming out of your standard-issue hose as-is will typically be have too much pressure for your garden.

A nozzle like this one from MAXFLO will ensure you can change up the flow settings based on the plant and its stage of life.

For instance, you might use the mist setting when watering your seedlings, and graduate up to the shower setting as the plants get older. I also like to leave the hose in the garden on the soaker setting for longer stretches of time while I do other things.

5 Gallon Grow Bags by VIVOSUN

One of the most important considerations when starting your gardening journey is where you’ll be growing.

If you don’t have the luxury of space or workable soil, then growing in 5 gallon grow bags in one of the most efficient options in terms of pounds per square foot.

You can even these grow bags to supplement what you already have growing in raised beds and other areas. They are a great way to keep voracious growers out of precious garden space where they would take over (looking at you squashes, zucchini, and even tomatoes.)

100 Pack Biodegradable Plant Starter Pots

If you’re going to be starting seeds indoors, you’ll need starter pots for them to live in before they graduate to the outdoors.

Starting seeds indoors is absolutely not essential, depending on what you’re growing. Some vegetables like to be started in a warmer, more controlled environment, like tomatoes.

I like these starter pots because they are biodegradable and big enough for heftier seedlings.

Plant Mister Spray Bottle

Speaking of seedlings, if you’ll be starting plants indoors you’ll absolutely need a spray bottle to mist your plants during the early stages of its life.

Anything stronger than a mist can permanently damage or even kill your baby plants. We don’t want that!

This spray bottle is the gentlest one I’ve found for both your plants and you. The continuous mist decreases hand fatigue by eliminating the constant squeezing.

Get inspired to make some special memories around stunning garden fire pits.

This post is all about garden fire pit ideas.

How to Choose the Right Type of Fire Pit for You

Before we get into the cute garden fire pit inspo pics, we’ll need to cover the different types of fire pits and which one may be best for your and your outdoor space.

Wood Burning Fire Pit

Wood burning fire pits are classic and add a rustic, cozy look to any garden space.

Plus, wood burning fire pits tend to be bigger (more people you gather around to make s’mores) and burn hotter (a plus if you want to use when it’s actually chilly outside).

On the other hand, wood burning fire pits of course use wood as fuel, which can produce a lot of smoke and leave a lingering scent on your clothes and hair. (Although, I personally like that smell.)

Luckily, many modern wood burning fire pit models are designed so that the airflow minimizes smoke.

To combat the smoke, make sure you use dry firewood.

Seasoned wood bundles can be purchased at most hardware stores. However, because firewood burns so quickly, it can be expensive, even compared to refilling a propane tank for a propane fire pit.

For these reasons, you may want to look into sourcing your own firewood.

Propane Fire Pit

Propane fire pits tend to be lighter, and add a sleek modern feel to your outdoor space.

A propane fire pit may be a good option for you if you want to be able to transport your fire pit easily, perhaps to another backyard party or tailgating event.

Propane fire pits are also easier to start, maintain and extinguish. Simply turn a knob to get it started, and turn it off when you’re done.

Propane fire pits also don’t put off any smoke.

However, the down side is that they also don’t put off as much heat. Propane fire pits rely on lava rocks to cover the heating element and distribute heat. To give your propane fire a little extra oomph, you can buy extra lava rocks to help disperse the heat.

Wood Burning Fire Pits

A Complete Guide to Non Toxic Beauty Products

Looking for the best non toxic beauty products, but don’t know where to start? This complete guide to natural beauty will help you sort through the nonsense and start your journey to healthier products.

The current beauty industry landscape is a scary place, especially after you’ve become a more conscious consumer.

I know, because I have been there! When I started my non toxic journey 10 years ago now, the clean beauty industry was not what it is today.

There were maybe a handful of companies offering non toxic beauty products. Frankly, those products just did not perform compared to the conventional products of the day.

I comprised by making my own homemade concoctions in my bathroom and using whatever drugstore cosmetics in greenwashed packaging I could get my hands on. (Some of those homemade concoctions I still stand by. Manuka honey and jojoba oil FTW.)

Since then there have been many advancement in the non toxic beauty space, but it’s not without it’s challenges.

For starters, there is so much conflicting information out there!

How do you know what ingredients to look out for? How do you find safe products that don’t sacrifice effectiveness?

Read on for more information on potentially harmful ingredients to avoid, non toxic beauty resources, and some of our favorite non toxic beauty brands.

This post is all about non toxic beauty products.

What Does Non Toxic Mean?

First, let’s get into what we mean by non toxic beauty products.

Non toxic does not mean “containing chemicals.” That would be silly. Everything is made of chemicals. You drink the chemical compound H2O daily to survive.

Second, non toxic does not necessarily mean natural. There are plenty of chemicals that come from nature that are toxic.

When we talk about non toxic beauty products here, we mean products that reduce risk of exposure to potentially harmful substances to you (and the planet).

Dose Makes the Poison

Any toxicologist will tell you that the dose of any one substance makes the poison. The classic example of this is Tylenol. Take the appropriate amount of Tylenol, and you’ll relieve your headache. Take too much, and it’s fatal.

Heck, this is even true with salt! You can absolutely overdose on salt.

Anyway, while it’s true that the dose makes the poison, the safe dose (when applied over many years and repeated exposures) has not been established for some chemicals found in beauty products.

We are believers in the precautionary principle, which suggests that the onus of proving safety lies on the beauty companies themselves.

Also, chemicals that show some concerning properties (whether in animal studies, etc.) are guilty until proven innocent.

My thought is simple: if you can avoid potentially harmful chemical with all the great non toxic beauty products that are out there now, why wouldn’t you?

Potentially Toxic Ingredients in Beauty Products

Ethylene Oxide

Formaldehyde

Parabens

Phthalates

Fragrance

Petrochemicals (petroleum jelly, mineral oil, paraffin wax, PEGs, ingredients that contain the prefix butyl- or propyl-)

Clean Beauty Products Websites and Resources

Environmental Working Group (EWG)

The EWG is a community powered by public health activists and scientists working to help consumers make healthy choices.

The EWG consolidates the research on potentially toxic substances into handy purchasing guides for everything from skincare to groceries.

Their Skin Deep database is an immensely powerful online tool that allows you to search for any skincare or cosmetic ingredient, brand or product.

Their comprehensive database will produce a safety rating of that ingredient, brand or products based on the available research.

I will say the EWG is not perfect, as there is some subjectiveness in their safety rating scores. They have recently come under fire in some circles for potentially cherry picking standards against which they judge certain ingredients.

Still, it’s an incredible resource if you have a specific brand or product you want to research before buying.

Or, if there is a particular ingredient (like those listed above) you want to learn more about.

Best Non Toxic Makeup Brands

Ilia

When it comes to clean beauty, Ilia is the GOAT. Just take their cult-classic Super Skin Serum Skin Tint for example. This single product combines skin-healthy ingredients with SPF 40 while providing buildable coverage and an other-worldly glow.

Plus Ilia’s non toxic makeup that is on-par performance-wise to their conventional peers. Just try their highly pigmented Colorblock lipsticks once, and I promise you you’ll never go back.

Kosas

Kosas is kind of like the cool kid of clean beauty, making a name for themselves with their consistently trendy products and fun packaging.

Don’t be fooled though, their products pack a punch.

I’m especially a fan of their eyebrow line, and particularly their Air Brow gel, which provide long-lasting hold for fluffy, bold brows.

100% Pure

100% Pure is kind of the OG clean beauty brand. I remember they were one of the few non toxic makeup that were around when I started my clean beauty journey.

100% offers a wide range of products at a reasonable price. I especially love their complexion products, like the pearly primer and skin tint.

These products work, just don’t expect the trendiest packaging! These guys have been around the block and don’t have time for that nonsense, okay?!

Best Non Toxic Skincare Brands

Living Libations

Living Libations is the Canadian skincare brand conceived by non toxic beauty pioneer and olfactory genius Nadine Artemis. This woman knows her stuff, and has been in the game since it was invented.

Starting out as kind of a niche brand with whacky branding, Living Libations has become a brand with a cult-like following.

Alanis Morissette is a diehard fan. What more do you need to know?!

I’ve talked about Living Libations fragrance in another post about non toxic perfume, but they also have a wide range of natural skincare products, from cleansers, moisturizers, spot treatments, and everything in between.

Best Natural Cleanser

While we’re talking about Living Libations skincare, start with their Best Skin Ever cleanser. It’s gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin, and removes makeup like no other. Plus, the name says it all.

The secret to their Best Skin Ever cleanser is its simplicity. It’s made from seabuckthorn oil, which is packed with nourishing omega fatty acids.

Living Libations even offers a number of varieties of their classic Best Skin Ever cleanser, like rose, sandalwood, and even chocolate!

Best Non Toxic Sunscreen

The Kari Gran Essential Tinted sunscreen has it all: simple ingredients, light coverage, and SPF 28.

This is one of the few sunscreens I have been able to find with all-natural ingredients that you can recognize.

From the brand, “Powered by non-nano zinc, it features an antioxidant-rich trio of red raspberry seed, french plum, and macadamia nut oils to moisturize, fortify, and restore radiance.

It also comes in three very versatile shades. Normally I wouldn’t recommend a tint with as few shades as this, but because the coverage is light, each shade actually covers a good number of skin tones.

Protect your skin from the sun while simultaneously maintaining your skin’s natural microbiome (and natural brilliance!)

Non Toxic Perfume That Will Make People Stop on the Street to Ask How You Smell So Good

Looking for a non toxic perfume that will have people stop you in the street to ask how you smell so good? These recommended fragrances are that intoxicating, but skip all the potentially harmful chemicals.

Scent is closely tied with memory.

This is why many people have a ‘signature scent,’ and why the thought of giving it up may be akin to ego death.

Unfortunately, dousing yourself in the same commercial fragrance day in and day out may be harmful to your health (and to those around you.)

The good news is I promise you there are healthy alternatives that will keep you smelling fresh and make you stand out.

I myself had made the switch from conventional perfume to a non toxic alternative (listed below!), and since then more than one friend has pulled away from a hug commenting on how good I smell. It is possible!

Your non toxic signature scent awaits.

This post is all about non toxic perfume.

The Problem With the Fragrance Industry

At a certain point in your non toxic journey, you’ll probably become obsessed with reading ingredient labels.

Scanning the labels of common household goods like cosmetics, cleaning products and more can reveal some seriously concerning chemicals lurking in our stuff.

However, you might notice that your favorite perfume does not come with an ingredient list.

This is because of an outdated law that protects the fragrance industry from disclosing ingredients in the name of trade secrets.

In effect, fragrance companies don’t have to tell you which of the 4,000 chemicals used in the industry are in your perfume. And it could be many, as a single scent can be made of hundreds of different chemicals.

Fragrance Industry Regulation

What’s more, the fragrance industry is largely self-regulated by the research arm of the International Fragrance Association (IFRA), a trade organization for fragrance businesses.

The IFRA has a comprehensive review process that sets safety standards for the industry. Adherence to these standards is largely voluntary.

Potential Health Concerns of Fragrance

Nearly 35% of the population report migraines and other health complaints due to exposure to fragrance.

However, these are just the immediate health effects.

Some experts have raised concerns about the long-term effects of repeated exposure to some of the chemicals used in the fragrance industry.

According to a reporting from Research for Women’s Voices for the Earth (WVE), a women’s health non profit, more than 1,200 fragrance chemicals currently in use have been flagged as potential or known “chemicals of concern” by various international watchdogs and governing bodies.

According to the report, some of these chemicals are potentially carcinogenic, while others may be endocrine disruptors (meaning they may mimic certain hormones, or block hormone receptors.)

Our Philosophy Regarding Fragrance

Some linkages to health concerns are stronger than others based on the available science.

We may not know how repeated exposures to the chemicals of concern used in the fragrance industry affect human health over time.

I like to apply precautionary principle to all my consumer choices. While many of the chemicals used in the fragrance industry may be safe in appropriate doses, I would like see more transparency and more research in many key areas.

In the meantime, there are alternatives.

Best Non Toxic Perfumes

Best Floral Fragrance

Josh Rosebrook – Enfleuria Botanical Fragrance

Josh Rosebrook is the king of natural skincare, but his foray into fragrance has also been a huge success. This floral fragrance is formulated with the essential oils of gardenia, jasmine and citrus blossom using ancient French distilling techniques.

Best Tropical Fragrance

Leahlani Skincare – Perfume Oil

This non toxic fragrance is for my babes that rather be at the beach. Transport yourself to a tropical vacation with just on spritz of this perfume with notes of vanilla, coconut, and Hawaiian puakenini flowers.

Best Fresh & Clean Fragrance

Sigil – Aqua Viridi

This non toxic fragrance from Sigil is meant to represent the element of water (they have several perfumes with elemental themes.) This one would be great for water signs (hi, looking at you Pisces!) It has notes of seaspray, but ultimately is a clean scent with petitgrain and blue cypress.

Best Non Toxic Perfume Overall

Living Libations – Lavish Abundance

I almost don’t want to you tell you about this, because it’s my own signature scent. And it’s like, so good.

No exaggeration, this perfume literally has people stop me on the street asking me how I smell so good. A simple combination of jasmine, lemon, lavender and vanilla, this fragrance is much more than the sum of its parts. Somehow the combination works together to become something much more–slightly tropical, somewhat sweet, and very alluring.

Best Urban Homesteading Books for Beginners

Want to learn more about living closer to nature in the big city? Get started with these essential urban homesteading books for beginners (and everyone along the journey!)

When I was just starting my urban homesteading journey (although I wouldn’t have necessarily had the language to call it that) I didn’t know where to look for resources.

I would find a book or blog here or there that approximated what I was looking for, but it was very difficult to find comprehensive material that covered all the skills I wanted to learn.

Instead, I would learn how to pickle veggies from a local chef, learn how to bake sourdough bread from YouTube, and learn how to garden from what I could piece together from my dad’s advice and few books.

(There was also a lot of flying by the seat of my pants!)

To be honest, urban homesteading is a lifelong journey, and you will always be learning and experimenting. That’s what I love about it!

However, I wanted to share the list of books I wish I had at the outset to jumpstart my urban homesteading journey and make the process a little smoother.

Happy homesteading!

This post is all about the best urban homesteading books for beginners.

What is Urban Homesteading?

Before we get into my favorite urban homesteading books, a little definition is in order.

You may be wondering, “What the heck is urban homesteading?”

According to Wikipedia, homesteading is a lifestyle of self-sufficiency. Basically, a homesteader lives off the land to generate their own food and meet their basic needs.

Homesteading usually consists of subsistence agriculture (growing food just to feed yourself and not for profit), preserving food, and sometimes production of clothing and other goods.

Homesteading is typically practiced in rural areas where folks have access to lots of land for growing food, etc.

In contrast, urban homesteading is the pursuit of some aspects of self-sufficiency in a more densely populated setting that sets constraints on land ownership.

What are the Skills of Urban Homesteading?

I see urban homesteading as an adaptable set of skills that is less about self-sufficiency and rugged individualism and more about reducing dependency on the products of capitalism. It’s about engaging with the natural world and leading a deeply satisfying life.

What are these skills? I see the core tenets of urban homesteading as gardening, preserving, and foraging.

Others may include clothes making, animal husbandry, and hunting or fishing. (These are great, I just haven’t gotten that far myself. If you have any resources in these areas, please feel free to share!)

As such, I’ve organized my urban homesteading book recommendations by these skills, as well as some general books that cover a wider range of homesteading topics.

Urban Homesteading Books

The Urban Homestead: Your Guide to Self-Sufficient Living in the Heart of the City

by Kelly Coyne and Erik Knutzen

This book was the first comprehensive book on urban homesteading I ever picked up, and has since served as my bible.

In fact, the cover of this book was where I first saw the phrase ‘urban homesteading,’ and something just clicked. I knew I had found my life’s passion.

Coyne and Knutzen are the real deal, growing food and raising chickens on their 1/12 acre lot in Los Angeles for the past couple decades.

This book covers most of the essential skills of urban homesteading, including small-space gardening and urban foraging.

The authors give you plenty of step-by-step projects to get you well on your way to growing pounds of your own food no matter how small your space. (Seriously, no excuses! You don’t even need a backyard–they LOVE container gardening.)

The Backyard Homestead: Produce all the food you need on just a quarter acre!

by Carleen Madigan

This is probably the best-selling book on urban homesteading, and with good reason.

The comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know to grow and preserve your own food.

Grow a bountiful crop of fruit and veggies, raise your own animals, and even keep bees in the city with this all-encompassing book. Then when you’re done, preserve the harvest for next year with Madigan’s tips to dry, can and otherwise preserve foods.

Preserving – Urban Homesteading Books

Ball Complete Book of Home Preserving

by Judi Kingry and Lauren Devine

I almost don’t need to put another book on preserving in this category because this is the widely-acclaimed GOAT.

Originally published in 2006 and since selling over a million copies, the Ball Complete Book of Home Preserving was updated in 2020 with over 400 new recipes to match the needs of the modern-day home cook with expanded sections on fermentation and low-sugar canning.

There’s truly something for everyone to learn in this tome, from the beginner to the experienced home-canner.

New World Sourdough: Artisan Techniques for Creative Homemade Fermented Breads; With Recipes for Birote, Bagels, Pan de Coco, Beignets, and More

by Bryan Ford

While not technically a preserving technique, I tend to lump sourdough and other ferments under this category because fermentation is the process of preserving food without the need for refrigeration.

It’s how our ancestors did it, and it happens to create some of the world’s most complex and delicious foods!

Sourdough bread is perhaps the most appealing of the fermentation projects to the modern consumer.

This book brings the ancient process of sourdough into the new world with some truly innovative recipes. My mouth is watering.

Gardening – Urban Homesteading Books

Weedless Gardening

by Lee Reich

PhD-level gardening expert Lee Reich offers low-impact gardening techniques that work to restore the health of your soil and keep weeds at bay.

The best part? These techniques involve minimal human intervention and are based on the tenets of permaculture. (AKA, skip the annual backbreaking tilling and weeding.)

Basically, Reich emphasizes healthy soil achieved through natural techniques as the best bet against unwanted pests.

This book is not necessarily for the urban homesteader, but gardeners of all kinds can learn from his methods.

The Year-Round Vegetable Gardener: How to Grow Your Own Food 365 Days a Year, No Matter Where You Live

by Niki Jabbour

To be honest, this is probably not a beginner’s book (Unless you’re really ambitious! Otherwise, I would start with the general urban homesteading books mentioned earlier.) but I thought it was a worthy book to include here.

Jabbour is a seriously impressive gardener, growing veggies year-round in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

I don’t know if you know, but Canada gets COLD. Jabbour helps gardeners who might otherwise be limited by the seasons extend their harvest, and therefore increase production.

I love Jabbour’s book because by applying her techniques, gardeners in cooler climates will reduce their dependency on imported food in the colder months.

Foraging – Urban Homesteading Books

Backyard Foraging: 65 Familiar Plants You Didn’t Know You Could Eat

by Ellen Zachos

I absolutely love this book for beginner foragers.

This book features 70 edible weeds, flowers, and mushrooms that commonly grow in urban and suburban areas.

The best part is many of these plants and fungi are probably familiar, you just didn’t know they were edible or how to prepare them!

Along with full-color pages and helpful tips for identification, Zachos provides easy recipes for each plant.

This post was all about urban homesteading books.

According to Waste360, Americans exchange 36 million heart-shaped boxes, 198 million roses, and 180 greeting cards on February 14 every year.

Of course, most of these greeting cards, trinkets, and plastic containers end up in a landfill.

Beyond that, these Valentine’s Day gifts are boring and played out!

What Do You Mean by Sustainable Valentine’s Day Ideas?

Instead of buying meaningless gifts (if you are looking for the perfect sustainable Valentine’s Day gift to complement your Valentine’s Day plans, click here) I like to create special experiences for my partner on Valentine’s Day.

Research shows that gifted experiences tend to make people happier than physical gifts, as they create memories and moments for deep connection.

They also happen to be better for the environment and much less expensive!

Read on for some of my favorite eco-friendly Valentine’s day ideas to surprise and impress your partner come February 14.

Warning! Some of these will get a little sexy. These ideas are meant for romantic partners, but feel free to draw inspiration how you see fit.

This post is all about sustainable Valentine’s Day ideas.

Eco Friendly Valentine’s Day Ideas

1) Draw a Bath

Let’s be honest, Valentine’s Day is usually on a weekday and not a holiday that people tend to have off.

Getting into a romantic mood can be difficult after coming home from a long day at the office (including the work-from-home office!)

Help your partner make the transition by drawing them an extra-special warm bath. This can include dried flower petals, candles, bubbles (both bubbly soap or champagne!)

My ideal bath would include my favorite bath bomb and a glass of wine (which I can rest on a classy teak board!)

2) Treat Them to a Foot Bath

If bath time isn’t your partner’s thing, try treating them to a foot bath instead.

I find that even the staunchest bath-haters can enjoy the relaxing benefits of a foot bath! It’s basically like a mini spa experience, and you can do it while reading or sitting in front of the TV.

You’ll need a tub to fill with hot water and some epsom salts for maximum relaxation.

Epsom salts contain magnesium, which is known to ease muscle soreness and stress. A foot bath with epsom salts are especially good for someone who is on their feet all day!

3) Give Them a Massage

Giving a massage is a great tool in your tool belt of connection–for use anytime, not just on Valentine’s Day! I seriously love both giving and receiving massages. (Can you tell my love language is touch?)

Set aside a good amount of time (at least 10 minutes!) and focus on areas of concern. Many people hold tension in their neck and shoulders, so this is always a great place to focus.

You can use almost any oil you have lying around the house to keep things slippy and comfortable (my favorite is jojoba oil.)

However, if you want to kick it up a notch and anticipate things getting spicy, check out the All Night Long Kit from Foria.

This gift set comes with a full-size bottle of Awaken Arousal Oil (with stimulating ginger), Intimacy Bath Salts, along with some other tantalizing goodies.

4) Spice it Up With Tattoos

Okay, this one is definitely sexy!

Try surprising your partner with a completely different look for Valentine’s Day night. This can be full-on role play or just stepping into a new persona using a few fun visual cues.

For example, try applying a bunch of temporary tattoos (if you don’t have any) and thick black eyeliner for rocker Suicide Girls look. Try playing with something more innocent or feminine if you tend to swing the other way. Have fun with it!

5) Make a Specialty Cocktail from Your Travels

Have you and your partner ever enjoyed a cocktail while traveling that you’ve been dying to recreate at home but just never found the time? Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to recreate that magic of travel via the art of the cocktail!

Whether it was a sazerac in New Orleans or a piña colada in San Juan, take the time to surprise your partner with a special drink at home.

I love America’s Test Kitchen How to Cocktail book for specific instructions on how to make most classic cocktails enjoyed around the world.

6) Make Their Favorite Meal or Treat

Have you ever seen the Bon Appetit show Gourmet Makes with Claire Saffitz? Basically, the host tries to recreate common supermarket treats (like Reese Peanut Butter cups or Pizza Rolls) using gourmet ingredients.

Similarly, you can try recreating a favorite supermarket treat, or a special dish you enjoy out at a restaurant at home.

For example, my partner loves Pop Tarts and I have been meaning to attempt a homemade version for years. Maybe this blog post will finally get my butt in gear!

7) Make Them a Gratitude Jar

My friend did this for her boyfriend once, and I think it’s just the cutest idea–especially for Valentine’s Day!

Start by writing down things about your partner you love on little scraps of paper.

If you’re feeling really ambitious (and grateful for your partner!) challenge yourself to come up with 365 things you appreciate about your partner so you have 365 (!) little scraps of paper.

(The paper scraps should be about fortune cookie size, so they don’t take up a ton of room.)

Stuff the paper scraps in a mason jar or other cute container.

Have your partner pull a piece of paper out each day and read something nice about them that you love. Instant love fest!

Plus, the science of gratitude tells us that just the act of brainstorming things you love about your partner can make you yourself happier. Win-win!

If you wrote down 365 things, you can keep this going for a whole year, but obviously do what is feasible for you.

8) Donate to Their Favorite Charity

Personally, this is my favorite Valentin’s Day tradition that my partner and I keep returning to year after year.

Valentine’s Day can feel like such an indulgent and consumerist holiday, it can be refreshing to celebrate by thinking outside the relationship.

Instead, celebrate by donating to your partner’s favorite charity.

Your partner gets to feel seen and celebrated by you noticing their values, and you both have made the world a better place with your dollars.

9) Make Them a Playlist

Creating your crush a killer playlist is kind of a lost art in the internet age, but you can approximate the magic with your Spotify account.

For bonus points, create them a playlist of songs they haven’t heard but remind you of them, or songs that have been meaningful at different points in your relationship.

Honestly, the creative potential is endless!

Share your playlist with them via Spotify or other streaming app. (Or if your real old school make them a CD or tape! GASP! Although, in retrospect that is probably not the most sustainable option.)

DIY: Eco Friendly Valentine’s Day Cards for Kids (and Adults!)

eco friendly valentines day cards amazon

Are you frustrated when another holiday ends with a pile of greeting cards end up in the trash? These eco friendly Valentine’s Day cards offer some creative solutions to all that waste.

According to Waste360, an education platform serving the recycling industry, Valentine’s Day has a major waste problem.

Every year, Americans exchange 36 million heart-shaped boxes, 198 million roses, and 180 greeting cards on February 14.

This, according to the Greeting Card Association (who knew there was one!), makes Valentine’s Day the second most popular days for exchanging greetings cards after Christmas.

Now, where do all these cards (not to mention the trinkets, toys, stickers, etc.) end up? Eventually, in the trash.

That’s why I’m here to encourage you to rethink the traditional Valentine’s Day card and get creative.

Below are some fun Valentine’s Day card ideas you can make with kids for their classroom Valentine’s Day celebration, and some options for adults as well.

The ideas range from creating DIY cards to skipping the paper altogether and going digital.

No matter which eco friendly Valentine’s Day card idea you choose, know that you are doing your part to make this traditionally red-and-pink holiday more green.

This post is all about eco friendly Valentine’s Day cards.

Eco Friendly Valentine’s Day Cards

1) DIY Painted Leaf Valentine

This sustainable Valentine’s Day card project is an excellent one for kids especially.

First, begin by getting outside and collecting heart-shaped leaves. (It might be a good idea to think ahead for this one and start collecting leaves in the autumn for use when February 14 rolls around.)

Common tree with heart-shaped leaves to look out for include linden, redbud and foxglove trees. Research which trees are grown in your area!

After you have collected your heart-shaped leaves, you can either press and dry them, or paint them as-is.

A fresh leaf will be slightly heartier, making it a good option if you want to get toddlers involved in the painting process. Dried leaves will last longer, but are more fragile!

Second, paint the leaves in your favorite Valentine’s Day color. Red or pink would be the traditional choice here, but don’t let tradition hold you back!

Finally, paint a message, or write one in magic marker after the paint has dried.

You can also cut your leaf into a more traditional heart shape with scissors or an x-acto knife (adults only for this part!), but I tend to prefer the organic shape of the leaf.

What you’ll need for this project:

2) Seed Paper Valentines

Another eco friendly Valentine’s Day card idea is to use seed paper as your card material.

What is seed paper? Basically, what it sounds like. It’s a biodegradable paper that contains seeds that grow when planted in soil, watered, and cared for appropriately.

While still using paper, at least your Valentine’s Day card will have another life after its exchange. Plus, the recipient will enjoy your thoughtful Valentine all over again when a bed of flowers (or vegetables, or whatever seeds you use) bloom where the card was planted.

You can make you own seed paper with plants of your choice. This would be the most sustainable option, but I definitely don’t have the time!

Instead, I like this pack of heart-shaped seed paper from Bloomin.

You can either write your Valentine’s message directly on the seed paper heart, or attached the seed paper heart to another small card with tape or glue.

What you’ll need for this project:

3) Upcycled Crayon Hearts

This sustainable Valentine’s Day project is another great one to do with kids.

It’s fun, and it teaches kids the concept of upcycling, which is a sustainability skiil they will use for the rest of their lives!

For those wondering, upcycling basically the process of transforming what would otherwise be waste into something new.

Steps

  1. Source used crayon stubs from around your house, friends, family, the rec center, or school. I’m sure they will be happy to get them off their hands.
  2. Peel the paper from the crayons. This can be easier if you start the process by cutting open the paper using a sharp craft knife. (This is an adults-only step!)
  3. Sort crayons by color. This step is optional, but will give you a better sense of the color range you are working with, and give you an idea of how you want to pair colors–if at all.
  4. Fill oven-safe silicone molds with pieces of the crayon stubs. For this Valentine’s Day project, a heart-shaped mold is an obvious choice. But, feel free to get creative with different molds, and mix-and-match colors. Kids love this step!
  5. Place silicone molds into a preheated oven until the crayons melt. About 20 minutes at 250 degress.
  6. Remove the molds from the oven and let cool completely. This step can be sped up by putting the molds in the freezer.
  7. Pop out your upcycled crayons. Attach them to another small card with a message and give out as a Valentine.

What you’ll need for this project:

4) Get Creative With Materials You Already Have (Like Paper!)

Okay, real talk. We can recommend eco friendly Valentine’s Day card ideas all day, but the most sustainable option is going to always be to use what you already have!

The tenets of sustainability are reduce, reuse, recycle. Reduce is the first and most important, and asks us to reduce the amount of stuff we buy.

So, if none of the above projects appeal to you, or it’s getting close to Valentine’s Day and you simply don’t have the time to embark on a big project with your kids, resist the urge to go out and buy Valentine’s Day cards!

You can easily get by with what you have in your house, so long as you have some paper, scissors and a pencil.

Using some paper in your house, try making these simple heart envelope Valentine’s Day cards or heart origami. This would be a great use of leftover wrapping paper, scrap paper, or even bygone greeting cards.

(This is why I always recommend saving wrapping paper and old greeting cards!)

5) Send a Digital Valentine’s Day Card with Greenvelope

This one is more for the adults that wants to share eco friendly Valentine’s Day cards with their friends, family, and loved ones but don’t want to waste the paper.

Greenvelope is a digital card company that is committed to preserving the experience of opening a handwritten card.

Aside from saving paper, they donate a percentage of every sale to Mountains to Sound, a non-profit organization that maintains forests in the pacific Northwest.

They specialize in invitations, but also offer holiday cards for celebrations throughout the year, including Valentine’s Day.

Greenvelope has family Valentine’s Day cards, and cards meant only for that special person in your life.

If you forgot your annual family Christmas card, why not send a Valentine’s Day card instead with some cute family pics and a life update?

How it works:

Choose from one of Greenvelope’s many digital designs.

Personalize your greeting card with a message.

Enter in recipients’ email addresses and the date you would like the card to send.

When your recipients click on your message, the email will open like an envelope, displaying your chosen design and message!

Essential Non Toxic Cookware Every Kitchen Needs

best affordable non toxic cookware

Looking for non toxic cookware that performs and doesn’t expose you and your family to some nasty chemicals?

You’re in luck, because over the years we’ve tested a whole bunch of cookware, from sauce to saute pans, to give you this comprehensive guide to non toxic cookware.

As someone who appreciates a good non-stick pan (they do make life easier!), I was dismayed to learn about the health risks the chemicals used to make pans non-stick may pose.

Would I be sacrificing the ease of a non-stick pan if I opted for a healthier option?

Luckily, there are plenty non toxic alternatives available made from a variety of materials, like stainless steel, cast iron, and ceramic.

Each has their own strengths and learning curves, but will a little practice your new non toxic will be just as non-stick as the chemical versions.

Whether you’re stocking a brand new kitchen, or just replacing old pots and pans, it’s a good time to consider the toxins that may be lurking in traditional cookware.

This post is all about the essential non toxic cookware every kitchen needs.

What Makes Some Cookware Toxic?

The culprits are the chemicals used to make cookware non-stick.

Traditional non-stick pans get their non-stick coating made from highly water-and-heat-resistant chemical called Polytetrafluoroethylene, or fluoropolymer plastic (PTFE).

You may know PTFE as it’s brand name, Teflon.

The problem doesn’t come from PTFE so much as the chemicals used to make it.

The process of making PTFE traditionally uses another chemical called perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) which is a known toxin.

Specifically, PFOA has been established as an endocrine disruptor, meaning it can mess with your hormones. Yuck!

Many companies have moved away from using PFOA in the process of making their cookware non-stick.

Still, I have a better safe than sorry policy in my household. Especially since PFTE coating (regardless of PFOA use) can break down and release toxic fumes when heated over 500 degrees.

Plus, non-stick coatings will break down over time regardless and potentially end up in your food. This is why it you shouldn’t clean non-stick pans with abrasive sponges or cleaners.

Luckily, there are alternatives that work just as well, so why mess around?

Non Toxic Cookware Options

Your main decision in choosing a piece of non toxic cookware will be the material.

Options include stainless steel, cast iron, and ceramic.

Each material has its own quirks when cooking, but each perform just as well as your traditional non-stick pan (if not better in some areas!)

Finally, for those looking for a truly traditional non-stick pan, I have included a PFOA-free option at the end.

Stainless Steel – Non Toxic Cookware

Stainless steel cookware is a classic for a reason, and an easy place to start. It’s great for beginners that just want a few kitchen workhorses they can do all their cooking in!

First, it’s relatively light and comfortable (compared to cast iron!)

Second, fully-clad versions (like the stainless steel cookware recommended below) provide even heat distribution across the entire cooking surface. No more burning!

(Fully-clad just means the pan in made with multiple layers, and fully covered with stainless steel from the bottom to the rims.)

TIP: The key to making stainless steel cookware non-stick is to pre-heat the pan before cooking. Start on a low heat and slowly turn up the heat until you’ve reached your desired cooking heat.

Cast Iron – Non Toxic Cookware

People have been cooking with cast iron for centuries. Take part in that great tradition by investing in your own cast iron skillet.

Why cook with cast iron?

For starters, cast iron is very durable. A good, well-seasoned (more on seasoning later) cast iron pan can last generations.

You can cook with cast iron on a stove, grill, or even over an open flame. Bring your cast iron pan camping!

Second, iron has great heat retention. As such, cast iron will gives you the closest you can get to a perfect sear on a steak without firing up the grill.

It’s great for that mouth-watering browning effect on veggies, or crispiness at the end of a deep-dish skillet chocolate chip cookie.

TIP: Follow instructions for seasoning you cast iron pan. Seasoning is just a fancy word for cooking oil into your cast iron. Your cast iron will become naturally more non-stick with time.

Best Cast Iron Skillet

Ceramic – Non Toxic Cookware

Ceramic is like the new, cool kid of non toxic cookware.

Ceramic non-stick cookware hit the market in 2007 and has been improving in performance since, making it a viable contender against traditional non-stick cookware.

What makes ceramic cookware non-stick is actually a material derived from beach sand, so there is no health risk to heating it to high temperatures.

Overall, ceramic cookware offers the lightweight and versatility of stainless steel, but in pretty colors!

Don’t let the colors distract you though, this ceramic cookware can seriously perform.

It boasts some impressive non-stick ability without the hassle of seasoning.

Best Ceramic Cookware Set

PFOA-Free Non-Stick Cookware

For those of you who are not quite ready to give up the traditional non-stick pan quite yet, there are safer options out there.

Specifically, look for non-stick pans that are PFOA-free. This means they left this harmful chemical out of the production process of making the pans non-stick.

How to Use Non-Stick Cookware

Still, please be careful when using any non-stick pan! The non-stick coating can easily chip and degrade over time.

This means cleaning the pan with a soft sponge and non-abrasive cleaner. Avoid harsh cleaning agents like Ajax, Comet, and Bar Keeper’s Friend.

Also, avoid stacking your non-stick pan directly against other cookware. This can easily chip the coating. If you need to stack your pan, place a buffer like a paper plate or potholder in between pans.

(Plus, regardless of how well you treat your non-stick pan, the coating will not last forever. You will need to replace it eventually.)

7+ Best Eco Friendly Cat Toys for Your Feline Friend

non toxic cat toys

Looking for the best eco friendly cat toys that will entertain your furry friend without polluting the planet?

You’re in luck, because we tested a whole bunch of toys with our resident cats to give you this comprehensive guide to sustainable cat toys.

What’s Wrong With Conventional Cat Toys?

Unfortunately, many cat toys are made with cheap plastic and other yucky, non-biodegradable materials (that might even be bad for your cat!)

These conventional cat toys don’t last long, get literally chewed up, and are eventually thrown in the trash. They may end up in a landfill where plastic parts can persist in the environment for years to come.

Plastic Cat Toys Gone Wrong- Floppy Fish Fail

For example, cat-owners will remember the as-seen-on-TV Floppy Fishâ„¢ toy that was all the rage last year. This battery-operated plushy fish was stuffed with catnip and mechanically flopped around like a fish-out-of-water.

I had to have my two cats try it.

As the known cat-lover I am, unfortunately a number of my friends and family ALSO bought me the dang Floppy Fish.

And the worst part? It didn’t work.

It was a piece of crap with plastic parts that had to be thrown away. All three floppy fishes I was gifted also had to be thrown away!

I swore to myself I will only use eco friendly cat toys from there on out!

This post is all about eco friendly cat toys. Let’s get into it!

Best Eco Friendly Cat Toys

1) From The Field Deluxe Purrfect Gift Kit Cat Toy and Catnip

Ya’ll, I love this company From the Field, so you’re about to see a lot of them on this list. From the Field makes environmentally-friendly pet products and specializes in catnip, which they grown organically in Washington state.

Let me tell you, my cats go absolutely nuts for their potent products.

I recommend this gift kit as a good eco friendly cat toy starter pack. It’s also great if you’ve just brought home a new cat or want to gift to a cat lover in your life!

This sustainable cat toy gift set includes two refillable hemp-cloth mice stuffed with catnip, an all-natural cork bouncy ball, catnip essential oil spray, and back-up catnip.

What’s nice about the catnip mice in particular is that they are refillable, so once the catnip inside is spent, you can open the pouch and refill with fresh catnip. This ensures your cat toy has a nice long life and your cats never lose interest!

Everything in this gift kit is all-natural, biodegradable, good for your kitties and the planet!

2) Get Creative with Catnip and Buy in Bulk

While we’re talking about catnip, why not just buy the good stuff straight-up?

Catnip, or Nepeta cataria for you botany nerds, is actually a common perennial of the mint family.

Catnip contains a chemical called nepetalactone that is similar to cat pheromones, making it very stimulating to your feline friend. It may make them act wild for a bit, but it’s actually quite healthy and soothing for them!

Try buying catnip in bulk to refill eco friendly cat toys (as shown above), make your own cat nips toys, or simply stuff an old sock or something similar and watch your cat go to town!

3) Grow Your Own Catnip

If you have a green thumb (or even if you don’t, honestly) try growing catnip yourself!

It’s super easy to grow, and very low maintenance. If you know anything about similar plants from the mint family, you know that they can grow like weeds (because they are!)

I grow catnip in small pots and keep it outside in the warmer weather. In the winter, I bring the plants in and place in a high place where my cats don’t have constant access to it.

When the cats are ready for a treat, I put the potted catnip on the ground and let them graze! It’s really funny to watch and so healthy for your kitty!

4) Silver Vine Sticks

More potent but with a similar stimulating effect, silver vine sticks are a great option for cats that do not react to catnip.

Silver vine, or Actinidia polygama, is a non-toxic plant that is basically the catnip of Asia. (It’s just more intense!)

The vine sticks make a great toy to throw around with your furry friend. You might even be able to teach them fetch!

As an added bonus, chewing on the bark exfoliates cat teeth, keeping them gums and teeth healthy and clean!

5) Cat Grass

While we’re on the topic of growing things, another cat-friendly plant you can easily grow yourself is cat grass.

What is commonly known as cat grass is really just grass typically grown from rye, barley, oat or wheat seeds.

Grazing on grass is normal cat behavior, although we don’t quite fully understand why they do it yet.

Nibbling on cat grass is thought to be good for their digestion.

Luckily for you, cat grass is insanely fast and easy to grow. Just spread a generous blanketing of seeds in a soil-filled pot, cover with a 1/4 inch of potting soil and watch the grass grow!

Cat grass is particularly great because it will continuously grow, even after your cat has taken a few bites (or more!)

6) All-Natural Feather and Cork Cat Toy

This feather cat toy is a classic reimagined the sustainable way.

This eco friendly cat toy is handmade in the USA with all-natural cork and dye-free feathers.

The toy is interactive, so you and your cat can have some serious bonding time together. Interactive toys tell your cat you are a trusted friend!

7) Bae The Hemp Body Pillow Cat Toy

It’s like a body pillow, for your cat?!

This one-foot tall pillow is filled with catnip, silver vine, and valerian root to stimulate and soothe your furry friend.

The pillow’s substantial size gives your cat the satisfaction of hunting real prey, but don’t be surprised if your cat also snuggles up with it!

This eco friendly cat toy is handmade in USA with durable and sustainably-sourced hemp fabric.
