Craving that warming, cozy pumpkin spice flavor without going to the drive-thru? Add this easy pumpkin spiced coffee to your fall morning routine.
Listen, I love a PSL (that’s pumpkin-spice latte for the uninitiated) as much as the next gal, but I don’t have the time, energy or the espresso machine to be recreating those fancy drinks at home. I’m definitely NEVER going to make any of those flavored syrups, creams or foams!
Instead, when developing this recipe I was looking to incorporate the pumpkin spice flavors easily into my daily coffee (especially as the weather starts to get colder.)
I’m a drip or pour over coffee girl on the day-to-day. I think most Americans are.
Luckily, this pumpkin spiced coffee blend can be easily added to your ground coffee for your French press, pour over, or drip coffee maker. After blending the spices as described below, just add to your ground beans, press, pour, or turn on your drip coffee machine as you normally would, sip, and relish those autumnal flavors!
Why Use Whole Spices for Your Pumpkin Spiced Coffee
You’ll notice below that I recommend using whole spices and grinding those down wherever possible. For example, I recommend using whole cinnamon sticks instead of cinnamon powder. (The same goes for whole clove, cardamon, etc.)
The reason you want to emphasize whole spices its they have the biggest bang for your buck in terms of flavor. Powders spices lose their flavor really quickly.
It’s important to maintain those powerful flavors when making pumpkin spice coffee in a drip coffee machine or pour over because the hot water is just hitting the spices and grounds for a few seconds. You want it to be able to extract as much flavor in the shortest amount of time possible.

Pumpkin Spiced Coffee Recipe
For the spice blend:
3 tablespoons cinnamon
2 teaspoons ginger
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon clove
1 teaspoon cardamom
1 teaspoon star anise
Materials:
Spice grinder or mortar and pestle (if using whole spices)
For the coffee:
Makes two servings of coffee.
4 tablespoons ground coffee
1/4 teaspoon spice blend
Spiced Pumpkin Coffee Recipe Steps
Grind the whole spices in a spice grinder, coffee grinder, or mortar and pestle. Grind until you reach a medium grind. Note: I like to keep a separate second coffee grinder just for grinding spices so my coffee grinder isn’t contaminated.
Add 1/4 teaspoon of the spice blend to about four tablespoons of coffee grounds for two servings (cups) of coffee. Adjust ratios to the amount of coffee you are making or your strength preferences. For example, one and 1/2 teaspoon of spice blend should be enough for your average full pot of drip coffee.
Make your coffee as normal depending on your method. Remember, this spice blend works with pour over, drip coffee and French press.
Optional: Add your choice of milk and/or sweetener and enjoy! Note: I don’t typically sweeten my coffee but I find the bold spices in this coffee do well with a little sweetener.

In today’s post, I’m sharing my favorite sustainable wedding ideas. These ideas come from the process of planning my own wedding in September 2022. I knew I wanted to have an eco-friendly and unconventional wedding, but quickly learned the standard wedding advice did not have the environment in mind. In fact, there is so much noise out there in the wedding industry, that is can be difficult to wade through the opinions to plan a day that is really true to your values.
I wrote this post to empower other eco-friendly brides plan the sustainable wedding of their dreams.

#1 Sustainable Wedding Idea – Limit your guest list
This first sustainable wedding tip can be a hard pill to swallow. However, the old adage “reduce, reuse, recycle” is in that order for a reason. Reducing consumption by limiting guests is the sharpest blade we have in making a wedding more sustainable.
Of course, there’s no magic number, but the recycling company Zero Waste notes that a guest list over 100 people will increase the garbage exponentially.
No pressure if you have a big family, or just aren’t interested in having a smaller wedding.
If a small wedding appeals to you, brainstorm ways you can limit your quest with intention and compassion.
There are a lot of way you can narrow down your list: I’ve heard of couples that cut people that didn’t check in for a big life event, or folks hadn’t talked to in the last three months (or six, etc.).
Personally, we didn’t invite people to the wedding that didn’t know us both as a couple.
#2 Eco-friendly wedding dress
There are a lot of outdated assumptions about wedding dresses still kicking around. First, many people in the industry assume you’ll want to keep your dress forever as a keepsake to pass on to your own children one day.
Absolutely no shade if that’s you–let’s just be honest about what often happens: these dresses end up sitting in the attic untouched.
The other assumption is that you’ll want to spend thousands of dollars on a brand-new dress you’ll probably only wear once in your life.
The advent of rental and secondhand wedding dress retailers offer alternatives to the unconventional bride.
Rental Wedding Dress
Wedding dress-specific rental services are slowly catching on in the U.S. There are a few companies like The Dress Outlet and Poshare that offer the service. In addition, some major bridal companies David’s have a section dedicated to rental wedding dresses.
You can also check your local listings for rental companies where you can try-on before you rent.
Alternatively, you could rent a white dress that is not necessarily billed as a wedding dress from a rental service like Rent the Runway. (If you do, use my my link right here!)
The more adventurous may try searching sites like Facebook Marketplace, Poshmark and Ebay. Believe it or not, I know brides who found their dream dress on each of these sites.
Note, it can be helpful to have a specific dress or designer in mind when scouring secondhand sites.
#3 Sustainable Wedding Invitations
Digital Wedding Invites
Obviously, paper invites are traditional, and many couples enjoy the process of designing them.
But, for us, email invitations were the obvious choice. They are cheaper (maybe even free, depending on what platform you use) and they allow to to manage your RVSPs digitally (less clutter!)
The one downside that came up for us is that you may need to help your less tech-savvy guests respond to your invite.
We used The Knot for our wedding website and used the “message guests” feature to direct them to our RVSP page. From there, they would enter their names, accept or decline, select meals, etc. It was all seamless and FREE 99!
Alternatively, if you want a more formal digital invite that gives your guests the ~experience~ of opening real mail, try Greenvelope. This digital platform offers a simulated snail mail experience via email, but with extras you can only get digitally–like Google maps directions, calendar invites, and links to the gift registry.
Recycled Paper Invites
If you aren’t into digital invites, opt for recycled paper. The Knot and Paper Culture offer recycled options.
#5 Eco Friendly Wedding Idea – Sustainable Registry
Actually, the most sustainable option here would be to set up a cash fund in lieu of a registry. This cash fund could be put toward anything: your honeymoon, a home, etc. It’s helpful to define for your guests exactly what you’re saving for!
This is exactly what my fiancé and I did. We didn’t see a need for anymore stuff, as we have lived together for the past six years and had accumulated all the things we need.
If you are looking to put together a more eco-friendly registry, try Everylastly. This platform allows you to search for products based on your values including, durability, circularity, and sustainability.
#6 Eco-Friendly Decor
Thrift!
If you weren’t having fun already, here comes the really fun part–shopping for wedding decor!
The problem with most traditional wedding decor is that it only get used once and either sits in the attic or gets thrown out. The eco-friendly bride knows better than to create more waste for landfills!
Instead, try thrifting your wedding decor. There are plenty of former brides selling their used decorations on resale sites like Ebay, Poshmark, and even Facebook marketplace. These are great places to find wedding-specific items like card boxes, welcome signs, and guest books.
Of course, you can also hit up your local brick-and-mortar thrift shops. These can be great place to find everyday items like frames, vases, etc.
My biggest tip for thrifting your wedding decor would be to give yourself plenty of time to browse. You don’t want to be caught a couple weeks before your wedding looking to thrift a very specific item (this usually means you’re going to have to panic-buy something new instead!)
Buy Handmade Decorations on Etsy
If you can’t find a thrifted version of the decor you’re looking for, my next best recommendation is to find it handmade on Etsy.
There are plenty of amazing artisans and craftspeople to support on Etsy! To me, sustainability also means supporting small businesses.

Now I love flowers as much as the next girls, but I DON’T love how unsustainable the fresh floral industry can be. Plus, flowers only last so long before they get thrown in the trash. (At least they’re compostable!)

#8 More Eco Friendly Wedding Flowers
If silk flowers aren’t your jam, there are plenty of ways to make your fresh florals more sustainable.
First, always look for flowers that are in season. My wedding is in September, and that means plenty of dahlias!
Second, choose locally sourced flowers if you can. Is there a farm near your reception venue that does wildflowers?!
For example, one of my friend made an afternoon of flower-picking at a local with her bridesmaids the day before her wedding. They made simple centerpieces to be displayed the next day!
#9 Sustainable Wedding Ideas – Reuse and Repurpose
So you thrifted most of your wedding decor and opted for more sustainable florals, now it’s time to consider what happens to those decorations after the big day!
For this reason, I recommend shopping for your wedding decor with your real life in mind. Will you use that vase in your house after the wedding? What about those candlestick holders? Can you give your centerpieces away to your bridesmaids that night?
A wedding is only one day out of your life, and ideally the items you purchase for the event have a life beyond that.
Plus, you want your wedding to be a reflection of you. The true test of whether something fits your style and your values is whether you see yourself using it after your special day!
#10 Eco Friendly Wedding Favors
The most eco-friendly wedding favors are going to be those that are consumable, i.e. they’re going to get eaten or used up–like chocolates, soap, lip balm, or even wildflower seeds.
For contrast, I can’t tell you how many wedding beer koozies I have laying around that are not getting used!
Of course, favors are totally optional. I know more and more couples that are forgoing favors altogether and replacing that money they would have spent with a charitable donation.
#11 Eco Friendly Wedding Idea – Grand Exit
Honestly, the grand exit tradition of throwing rice isn’t that terrible sustainability-wise. I mean, it’s wasted food but at least it’s biodegradable.

This is an incredible all-in-one skincare product, acting as both a moisturizer and a cleanser. I love that I can buy refills of this product, which helps to cut down on my carbon footprint.

First up on my list, I wanted to share an eco-friendly activewear brand that makes sustainable workout clothing in fun prints and colors.I wish the size range was more inclusive (PACT goes from an XS to XXL), as people of all sizes want to shop sustainably.

I also appreciate how size inclusive the brand is, going from an XXS-6XL. This is a great brand for general workout clothes for someone who loves doing a variety of workouts. I really love Girlfriend Collective, and as someone who is at the smaller end of the size range, I think it’s important to shop at brands that are size inclusive. I want all of my friends to be able to shop at the same places I do!
Following those two fun activewear brands, I wanted to talk about eco-friendly wetsuits! Not all sustainable activewear is worn on land, and we want to be sure to be as responsible as possible when enjoying outdoor fitness activities in the ocean!
Patagonia is my go-to spot for all things eco-friendly in the water, with wetsuits for men, women and all genders.

A lot of people think Summersalt only makes swimsuits, but they also make eco-friendly workout clothes!
Sustainability Info:
On the eco-friendly scale, Summersalt focuses more on ethical manufacturing and labor. Their workout clothing is made in WRAP certified factories.
I’ve had my eye on this eco-friendly activewear brand for a while, as I love the color palettes that they use. Summersalt goes from a size XS to 2XL, making it more inclusive than other brands. I love their workout sets (BRB going to go dust off my tennis racket for their fun tennis looks!), and I love how they carry both loose fit and body hugging options.
REI is a well-known activewear retailer and brand, and I shop there all of the time! I find that certain sizes and sections can be picked over in Boston, because there’s so many outdoor enthusiasts in my city! When this happens, I head over to REI.com to find what I’m looking for.
REI is my go-to for outdoor clothing, such as hiking outfits, backpacking, rock climbing, etc. REI sustainable workout clothes typically go from an XS to 3X.

Now it’s time to talk about Outdoor Voices, an eco-friendly workout clothing brand with a cult-like online following! This eco-friendly brand starts at a size XXS and goes up to an XXL. This is a great brand for someone who wants to look cute at the gym, while also keeping the planet in mind.

I appreciate the brand’s emphasis on transparency with their production and manufacturing processes. The brand has detailed information on their materials and plans for the future here.
Rounding out my list of my favorite eco-friendly activewear brands, we’re going to switch things up a bit! Part of sustainable shopping includes seeking out gently used clothing items, and I love to use Poshmark to find specific pieces. You can find more sustainable clothing for kickboxing, Zumba, and a host of other types of workouts by shopping secondhand!
If you love a particular brand, but don’t love their sustainability practices, you can shop secondhand and help keep clothing out of landfills!
Final Thoughts – Sustainable & Eco-Friendly Activewear
Finally, an additional thing you can do to shop for sustainable and eco-friendly brands is to ask your favorite brands to be eco-friendly. Companies track what customers say about them online, and a great way to make fashion more eco-friendly is by publicly commenting on a brand’s Instagram or Facebook post (or TikTok video!) asking them, “Where is info on your sustainability practices and commitment?”
I know it seems silly and maybe feels like virtue-signaling, but I used to work in digital marketing, and I know that companies pay attention to these comments! They even go so far as to hire data analysts to determine what their customer base wants.
As more consumers ask brands these tough questions, it makes it easier for changemakers inside of a fashion company to get support for our joint cause to help the planet! And all of this thanks to a quick comment on social media! “Armchair activism” really does work!

This isn’t a fit for every baby shower, but many of the people I know are working with a birth doula to welcome their new baby to their home.
A doula can help a new family adjust to the care of a little one, as well as helping the parent who gave birth recover.
A doula is an investment in the long term health and sustainability of a family unit, so it may be appropriate to get a lovely eco-friendly card with a check inside to help cover the cost of a doula.
In 2024, we’ve become more aware of the challenges that come after giving birth. From talking with friends who have given birth, it can often feel like well-meaning family and friends are obsessed with the care of the new baby–but don’t think about the person who just gave birth.

Because a crib is such a personal choice for an expecting family, I would recommend reaching out and asking if they’d thought of a convertible crib!
Baby needs sunscreen, too! Because a baby’s skin can be so sensitive, it’s important to find the right sunscreen.
Researching baby sunscreens was a bit difficult, but then I found ThinkBaby! Next up on my travel gifts for her, a sustainable and ethically made towel for a woman going on a tropical vacation. I like to pack my own towel when going on a trip to hang in the sun, because hotel towels are often too short to lie on. (Plus, they’re not as cute as this one!)

This next gift is not a fit for every traveling woman. An eco-friendly cutlery set is great for a traveler who will be outdoors a lot or is going on an extended journey. (I probably wouldn’t get this gift for someone going to Western Europe, for example.) This cutlery set is perfect for an adventurer, who might find herself in situations where cutlery aren’t handy.
This natural cork glam bag is so versatile. Made out of stiff cork, this could be a clutch for a night out on the town in more casual settings, as well as a makeup bag that goes inside of a backpack or larger bag.
This gift comes in natural cork and red. More simple or minimalist women may prefer the natural cork, and those ladies who enjoy making a splash would likely enjoy the red.

Usually, I would not recommend buying shoes for a woman, as you won’t always know the correct size. But these ethically made “Mika Clog Sandals” from ABLE are so great, I just had to include them. These sandals can be worn with shorts and a t-shirt, or worn out to dinner.

For a long time, I didn’t quite understand everyone else’s obsession with packing cubes. But, I decided to give some a try (borrowing my boyfriend’s set of cubes), and now I get it!
